Moti Daman Fort - Fortress in Daman - Daman, India

This fort is different from the rest of the forts you must have visited. On the inside of the forts, you can see the church, government offices, schools etc. The fort area is very clean and well-maintained. If you are in Daman then this place is highly recommended. On the other side, you will find a lighthouse and beach, a view of the beach from the lighthouse is breathtaking.

The Moti Daman Fort is also famous for the Church of Bom Jesus, the Chapel of Our Lady of Rosary and the Church of Our Lady of Remedies. Visiting the fort makes for a truly intriguing experience for history lovers. The fort was built with an aim to protect the Portuguese against invasion by the Mughal army in 1559.

The Moti Daman Fort is one of the most significant tourist spots in Daman that attracts visitors in droves. Sprawling over an area of about 30,000 sq m, the ancient fort is famous for housing a large number of cannons. These beautifully designed cannons leave visitors fascinated with their noteworthy carvings. FORT OF MOTI DAMAN THE PORTUGUESE SETTLEMENT OF THE SOUTHERN BANK OF RIVER DAMAN GANGA WITH A FORMIDABLE FORTRESS IS CALLED MOTI DAMAN. PRIOR TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FORT OF MOTI DAMAN, THERE EXISTED A SMALL MUSLIM CITADEL UNDER THE CONTROL OF ABYSSINIAN CHIEF. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FORT STARTED SOON AFTER ITS CONQUEST IN 1559 A.D. AND LASTED TILL THE END OF 16TH CENTURY A.D. THE FORT COVERS AN AREA OF 30,000 SQ.MTS, WITH 10 BASTIONS AND TWO GATEWAYS. THE FORT IS PROTECTED BY MOAT ON THE LAND SIDE AND CONNECTS THE RIVER AND SEA. THE FORT IS BASICALLY POLYGONAL IN PLAN WITH PROJECTIONS AT REGULAR INTERVALS OF ABOUT 500 FEET AND CARRYING SPLAYED ANGULAR BASTIONS. THE FORTIFICATION WALLS ARE BATTERED AND PLAIN UP TO THE CORNICE LEVEL WHERE THERE IS BEADED MOULDING. THE PARAPET WALL ABOVE IS WITHOUT MERLONS BUT PROVIDED WITH LOOPHOLES. THE TERRACES CLOSE TO THE TOP OF THE WALL ARE CONNECTED TO THE INNER GROUND SURFACE BY OPEN FLIGHT STEPS AT MANY PLACES. ALL ALONG THE INNER WALL ON DIFFERENT POINTS OF THE FORT WALL ARE SITUATED BARRACKS FOR DEFENCE PERSONNEL. THE INSCRIPTION ABOVE THE SOUTHERN (LAND GATE MENTION THAT THIS GATE ALONG WITH THE BASTION ADJACENT TO IT WAS COMPLETED IN 1581 A.D. AFTER THE MUGHAL INVASION IN THE AKBAR'S REIGN. THE INSCRIPTION ON THE NORTHERN (SEA ) GATE GIVES THE DATE OF 1593 A.D. FOR THE COMPLETION OF THE FORT WALL ON THE NORTHERN SIDE. WITHIN THE CONFINES OF THE FORT WERE LOCATED THE PALACES, THE SECRETARIATE AND OTHER OFFICIAL BUILDINGS. A LARGE NUMBER OF PORTUGUESE GENTRY AND THEIR FAMILIES RESIDED WITHIN THE FORT WALLS

You feel like a different world as soon as you enter in the fort. Colorful houses, Church, Government old buildings, Fort, Gardens and many more attractions inside the fort. There are lots of photogenic spots where you can click a pictures inside.

A must visit place to witness the Portuguese influence in the port city. It's a vast fort complex spreading over an area of about 30,000 sq m built by the Portuguese. Now only the boundry wall of the whole complex remains intact on which you can walk & cover the whole circumference. Within the fort complex there are several canons, the Church of Bom Jesus, the Chapel of Our Lady of Rosary and the Church of Our Lady of Remedies & also the ruins of the Dominican monastry. While walking on its circumference you also see the old lighthouse, which is another important tourist attraction in Daman. However, covering the whole boundary wall on foot maybe a good 5-6 kilometres trek, which sometimes gets difficult because you have to walk on narrow but pretty high broken wall ruins left. So you can also cover the wall area right on the entrance of the fort complex & then cover the remaining points of interest on foot or by car from within the town complex inside the fort boundary wall.

A little disappointed that we were unable yo figure out how to get inside. We drove around and took some pictures from outside. It seems like a great tourist spot but the city needs to put in some effort to market this place. Seems like the government offices, Church and the fort were all 1 big cluster. Either way, a good place for pictures and admiring history
