Mother of God Cathedral, locally known as Valiya palli is the Headquarters of the Roman Catholic congregation in Malabar. The church has history dating back to 1513 when the Portuguese signed a treaty with the then Calicut ruling Kingdom, Zamorins The Italian architects were bought to Calicut for the sole purpose of designing this Gothic style cathedral. The curved arches above the doors and windows, the colonnade on the spires and many such architectural feats stand as a testimony to the aesthetic sense of Italian architects as well as artistic skill of Indian Workers.
Romam Catholic Church, Cathedral of the Diocese of Kozhikode. A beautiful church..... Old architecture with new looks. Well maintained. Very clean and peaceful. Seems like the Sunday English mass timing is shifted to 7:30am... At 7am there is rosary n litany. The choir singing for the English mass is very melodious (atleast when I visited it) and prayerful.
Such a beautiful and serene atmosphere.felt do good going there
Beautiful Church . This church has a history dating back to 1513 when the Portuguese signed a treaty with the Zamorins. With the permission of the Zamorins, the Portuguese built a factory in Kozhikode and a church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Immaculate Conception. The church was then known as Matri Dei. The setting up of this church ushered in a new era for the Catholic congregation of Calicut Diocese.
A beautiful, ancient church that's grandiose yet simple. Certainly worth a visit. Note: Google Maps takes you to a small door at the back and that's not the entrance! You will then have to walk around
Very beautiful, nice and peaceful place. Well maintained by the staff.
No place better than this, all your prayers will be answered .....(great architecture)
Located close to Beach Road, this church is locally known as Valiyapally and is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic congregation in Malabar. This church has historical significance that goes back to 1513 when the Portuguese entered into a treaty with the Zamorins. In fact it is the Portuguese who built a factory here and also a church, dedicated to Virgin Mary of Immaculate Conception. The church was called Matrei Dei ('Mater Dei' is Latin for 'Mother of God') and signalled a new era for the Catholic congregation of Calicut Diocese. The church has been renovated in 1599 and 1724. It was in 1923 that the church became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Calicut. The Gothic Cathedral was designed by Italian architects and the curved arches on the doors and windows have Italian influences. The neo-Roman architectural style is evident in the facade flanked by lofty square towers. The church wall has as a 200-year-old portrait of St. Mary which is a big draw. The interiors of the church is a stunning combination of white and brown and the chapel adjoining has a stone cross struck in bas relief on granite with a Portuguese inscription and is worshipped even today. The three beautifully carved wooden doors at the entrance has intricate detailing. A school is adjacent to the church and while I was here, I even saw a beautiful church wedding so the experience was perfect.
