Though the infrastructure is good & the toilet is also clean and hygiene (as of now), to reach the place, the travel facility & roads were little inconvenient. And also book ticket in online because it should be Rs20/- only or else in counter it is Rs25/-.
In 1958 Archeological Survey of India has found this place as a sand dune. Then ASI has digged and found this temple structure. Now the number of metal statues which was found in the temple are sent to the trichy museum. Only few stone workes are available here. Now Government of India is trying to develop this place as one of the attracted monument by ASI. the site has proper canteen and sanitation facilities. Now the entry fee has been fixed as Rs25/head for Indians and Rs300/head for foreigners. The temple is older (1300 years) than Thanjai Brahdeeswara temple that one of the UNESCO heritage site.
Very nice old temple. It explains our culture.
Preservation work/still going one. Approach road also needs maintenance and sign boards. A small writeup of the historical importance would have been more satisfying
KPNS'S - Kodumbalur - Moovar Temple, 10th Century by Velir dynasty. Located at Trichy - Madurai Route after Viraalimalai (Famous Hill Top Murugan Temple), Pudukottai District. Birth Place of 'Edangalai Nayanar'. In Silapathikaram this town referred as 'Kodumbai'. King Rajaraja I 's wife Vaanathi's Birth Place. Velir dynasty capital. From Karikal Chola period , they got married ti velir community. This temple built by King Boothi Vikarama Kesari, was married chola princess Anupama & Friend of Adita Chola I ( Son of the great king Vijayalaya Chola) When Abarajitha Pallava fought with Pandya in 9th century, when Vijayalaya Chola also joined pallava with Velir force and established chola dynasty. Topographically , Kodumbalur located in between pallava & Pandya Dynasty. Either they were with pallavas & Pandya. Once Cholas established, they had good relationship with them. This temple was built before , Thanjore big temple as it got the the nuances of pallava's architecture touch. There were 3 temples....now only two are remaining... KODUMBALUR AIVAR KOIL. Remains of a UNIQUE shrine with five individual sanctums with lingams - one at the centre and four at the corners with a common Mandapam and Nandi. It's called Ainthali(5 temple) in inscriptions. Belonged to early chola period, 10thcentury and these temples in Kodumbalur, buffer region between pandia and chola kingdoms were built by 'Irukkuvelir', army generals and chieftains under the cholas. These temples find an important place in the development of temple architecture in Tamil nadu, especially the chola region...!
Its a very small historical site 10mins off the highway and 36 kms from pudukottai. It is said to be from the early Chola period. The historical site has inscriptions dating back to 8th century. Out of the 3 temples, only 2 are intact, one has only the basement remaining.
9th-10th century chola temples. Most of the structure is restored. Anyone interested in architectural history or chola history, should visit.
