Melukote Kalyani, also known as the "Pushkarini" or stepped tank, is a historic water reservoir located in Melukote, Karnataka, India. Melukote is a significant pilgrimage town with temples and cultural heritage. The Kalyani holds cultural and historical importance, especially for its architectural and religious significance. The history of Melukote Kalyani dates back several centuries. It was built during the reign of the Hoysala dynasty, which ruled over Karnataka from the 10th to the 14th century. The stepped tank is characterized by its unique design with a series of steps leading down to the water level. Such tanks were commonly built near temples to provide a source of water for religious rituals and the local community. The tank has not only served as a water reservoir but also as a focal point for religious and cultural activities. It has been associated with various festivals and ceremonies held in the nearby Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The tank's architecture showcases the craftsmanship of the Hoysala period and reflects the significance of water management in the region. Throughout its history, the Melukote Kalyani has witnessed changes and renovations, and it continues to be an integral part of the cultural landscape in the area. It stands as a testament to the rich history and heritage of Karnataka.
