Dr. Rajendra Prasad unveiled Martyrs' Column on August 14, 1957, as a tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India's independence. The column is located near Palayam Masjid and is surrounded by a beautiful green lawn. It is also used for peaceful protest gatherings and other social activities.

It's a beautiful monument located near the Palayam Juma masjid. It was built as a memorial for the brave warriors who fought and lost their lives in the great freedom fighters. This monument and properly maintained greenery is of course a great tribute to India's freedom fighters. Today most of the political agitations in the capital city, against the state and central governments start from here.

"A Pillar Dedicated to Freedom" Unveiled by Dr. Rajendra Prasad on August 14, 1957, Martyrs' Column and the surrounding green lawn serves as a tribute to those who laid down their life for the country's independence. This important landmark in Palayam is also known as Raktha Sakshi Mandapam, and is situated within close proximity to major landmarks of the city such as the St. Joseph's Cathedral to the east, Palayam Juma Masjid and Palayam Ganapathy temple to the south and Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium to the west. The importance for the column in the city is displayed by the fact that it is often used as a place for peaceful gatherings, protest march and other important events

Martyrs Column or rktsaakssi mnnddpN (Rakthasaakshi Mandapam - in Malayalam) is one of the most important Public Landmarks of the Capital City of Thiruvananthapuram. Situated in the heart of the city in Palayam, The Column was constructed in the Capital after the formation of the State of Kerala in 1956 in memory of those who laid down their lives fighting for India's freedom. It was unveiled by the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, on 14th August 1957. Today, it's seen as a symbol of the democratic credentials of India and practically all public agitations or protests against the Central and State Governments commence from this Memorial. Even after 63 years of existence, the Column is well maintained and is worth a visit to pay homage to our founding fathers.
