Malik-E-Maidan Cannon - Fortress in Vijayapura - Vijayapura, India

Malik-E-Maidan Cannon is a 16th century cannon that is located at the Bijapur Fort in Vijayapura, Karnataka. It is the largest surviving block of artillery from the medieval period, weighing 55 tons and measuring 4.45 meters in length. It was cast by a Turkish engineer named Muhammad Bin Husain Rumi in 1549 and was used by the Deccan Sultanates in various battles. The cannon has a unique design, with a lion's head on its muzzle that is swallowing an elephant. The cannon is also known as the Lord of the Battlefield and has inscriptions in Persian and Arabic languages on its surface. The cannon is a remarkable example of the military and artistic achievements of the Deccan Sultanates.

Malik-e-Maidan is one of the largest medieval cannons of India. This 55 ton, bell metal cannon, was placed on top of the Sherzah Burj, one of the bastions of the Bijapur fort, in 1632. It was cast in 1549, in Ahmednagar at the order of Burhan Nizam Shah-I, for his son-in-law Ail Shah. The cannon's nozzle is carved in the shape of a lion's head with open jaws crushing an elephant to death. This depicts the cannon's destructive power. It wrecked havoc at the Battle of Talikota in 1565 & Vijayanagar Empire was defeated. This cannon generated extreme noise & heat. To avoid the deafening explosion, once the fuse is lit, the soldier would submerge himself in the square water pit close-by. Another inscription on the cannon is about the conquering of Bijapur by Aurangzeb, in 1686.

This spectacular canon has a long history to it and weighs around 55 tonnes. Despite being outdoors, there are no obvious signs of rust or any other signs of deterioration. Not sure what metal was used to make it because of the drastically different colour. To get to the site, you must ascend a few steps. There was no entry fee, and the area was well kept. There are no fees associated with parking and it can be done on the sides of the road.

Arguably the largest cannon of its type in the world. You need to climb a few flight of stairs. This place was heavily fortified. It has space for three canons like Malik e maidan with rotation mechanism. The rotation mechanism is not there any more. Parking can be done by road side.

Malik - E - Maidan cannon was set up by Ibrahim Adil Shah 2 nd. Located in the Vijayapura (Bijapur) Fort complex top of the tower. It was one of the largest medieval cannon with diameter of 1.5 meters, 8.5 Meters long and weightings 55 tons. It also called Lord of the Battlefield.
