This place is IIT ROORKEE James Thomason building also known as main building. Very beautiful and decorated with variety of flowers throughout the year. The maintenance of green and beautiful carpet grass is commendable. Good place for morning and evening walk. Most of the IIT ROORKEE students celebrate their birthdays at this iconic place. Note that walking on the grass is strictly prohibited.
Built in renaissance style, its construction began in 1852 and had several added constructions later. The Main Building is having a long and an illustrious history and a glorious past. It is the oldest engineering colleges in India. The noble edifice looks across the plains towards the snowy caps of the Himalayas. A suggestive establishment of the college has a credit to James Thomason, Lt. Governor of the Northwest Provinces about 1846, by Colonal Cautley. This building has a lush green lawn in front provide perfect ambience of every walk to its visitors. The building leaves an indelible impression on its visitants.
Main building hosts director room along with several Dean cabins. The building which is considered as an emblem of IITR has garnered more than 172 years. It is well preserved and seismic retrofitting of the structure has been done to minimize damage due to earthquake.
It's a beautiful and iconic place! But one isn't allowed to sit in lawns coz it's quite expensive.
