Mahesh Vilash Palace Shivgarh - Museum in Shivgarh - Rae Bareli, India

The place is very nice but the behavior of the security staff there is very bad.

Raja Bharkandi Mahesh Pratap Singh built this palace in 1942. It is located in the Rai Bareilley district of Uttar Pradesh and is about 65 kms from Lucknow.. It is the palace home of the Maharaja of Shivgarh, though now parts of it are used as school for kids and another part as office for Community Empowerment Lab (CEL). The design is a replica of Lalgarh Fort, Bikaner. His family were Gaur Rajputs. Gaur was the ancient name for Bengal where Mahesh Pratap's family were placed some centuries ago before they moved to Uttar Pradesh in search of more land. The palace has three sections - each one from a different era. The most recent section is in the front and is a beautiful white-washed palace where the king lives or visits sometimes with his family. This section hosts the CEL office as well as huge palatial rooms for guests as well. The second oldest part is right behind the main palace and houses the school. It is the most beautiful part of the palace but now old and also falling apart - there are multiple rooms locked and inaccessible to outsiders. The school is only a small part of it... and it is actually carved out of an old and rather huge ballroom. The oldest section is located at the far end and is almost inaccessible. It is used as a warehouse and is looks absolutely deserted.

As of now it's not a museum , however it's a resident of raja Shivgarh. Popularly known for it's "raid" movie shooting take place at this palace

Very nice and beautiful place. Ancient structures and the surrounding is just like old era..beautifully maintained and preserved....

This palace has been maintained very well, we were very happy to see this place, but on the right side of this place there are pagodas of Lord Shiva, but there is no one to maintain those pagodas, these historical pagodas Should also be thoroughly cleaned and maintained.

Great place, 1 hour drive from Lucknow, excellent initiative and work by KMC,
