Introduction Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated by the people of Jain faith in the month of March-April. It is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahavira who was the last and the twenty-fourth Tirthankara of Jainism. Legend of Mahavira Mahavira was born to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala, in the Ikshvaku dynasty. The legend states that during the pregnancy period the mother of Mahavira had a number of auspicious dreams. In Jainism, such dreams during the pregnancy indicate the arrival of a great soul. King Siddhartha interpreted the total of sixteen dreams that the queen had seen. It is also believed that upon the birth of Mahavira, Devraj Indra performed Abhisheka, which is the ritualistic anointment on Sumeru Parvat. Spiritual Event Mahavir Jayanti is a spiritual occasion for the people of Jainism and religious ascetics. They spend their time in meditation and reciting the verses of Mahavira. Usually, a temple is the place of worship and meditation. Devotees also travel to significant Jain shrines and temples located across the country. Many Jain gurus are invited to the temples and even houses to preach about the teachings of Mahavira and the principles of Ahimsa and humanity that he professed. Practicing a strict fast is also one of the important methods to observe Mahavir Jayanti. Devotees give more significance to humanity, ahimsa, and harmony as preached by Mahavira. Conclusion Mahavir Jayanti is a major festival of Jains, not only in India but throughout the globe. The very basic principle of Jainism is Ahimsa or non-violence. It is also the first and most important principle of life professed by Mahavira himself.

A magnificent temple established at the birth place of the 24th Jain tirthankar, Bhagwan Mahaveer. It's really very beautiful. It is so peaceful that you can meditate here easily. Believe me, there is pin drop silence every time. There are a lot of trees here which give it a marvelous look. You won't regret visiting there. It's a Jain temple, so, you can't carry any leather article there. You have to wash your feet and hands before entering the temple.

Last but not least, I visited the Birthplace of Lord Mahavir i.e. Basokund. A white marble temple is looking so beautiful. I sit inside the temple approx 30 min. I want to sit more time in this temple because of some kind of frequency but we are bounded with time. We have to back Patna till evening. Overall I had a wonderful experience visiting Vaishali. Whenever I will get some free time, try to visit this place again.

Mahavira (Sanskrit: mhaaviir) also known as Vardhaman, was the 24th tirthankara (supreme preacher) of Jainism. He was the spiritual successor of the 23rd tirthankara Parshvanatha.[9] Mahavira was born in the early part of the 6th century BCE into a royal Kshatriya Jain family in ancient India. His mother's name was Trishala and his father's name was Siddhartha. They were lay devotees of Parshvanatha. Mahavira abandoned all worldly possessions at the age of about 30 and left home in pursuit of spiritual awakening, becoming an ascetic. Mahavira practiced intense meditation and severe austerities for twelve and a half years, after which he attained Kevala Jnana (omniscience). He preached for 30 years and attained Moksha (liberation) in the 6th century BCE, although the year varies by sect. Historically, Mahavira, who revived and preached Jainism in ancient India, was an older contemporary of Gautama Buddha. Jains celebrate Mahavir Janma Kalyanak every year on the 13th day of the Indian Calendar month of Chaitra.[10] Mahavira taught that observance of the vows of ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truth), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (chastity), and aparigraha (non-attachment) are necessary for spiritual liberation. He taught the principles of Anekantavada (many-sided reality): syadvada and nayavada. Mahavira's teachings were compiled by Indrabhuti Gautama (his chief disciple) as the Jain Agamas. The texts, transmitted orally by Jain monks, are believed to have been largely lost by about the 1st century CE (when the remaining were first written down in the Svetambara tradition). The surviving versions of the Agamas taught by Mahavira are some of Svetambara Jainism's foundation texts, but their authenticity is disputed in Digambara Jainism. Mahavira is usually depicted in a sitting or standing meditative posture, with the symbol of a lion beneath him. His earliest iconography is from archaeological sites in the North Indian city of Mathura, and is dated from between the 1st century BCE and the 2nd century CE. His birth is celebrated as Mahavir Janma Kalyanak and his nirvana (salvation) and also his first shishya (spiritual enlightenment) of Shri Gautama Swami is observed by Jains as Diwali.

his place is know as the birth place of Bhagwaan Mahavir. BC 599 on 'chaitra shukla trayodashi' vardhamaan took birth to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala here. In the year 1956, the then 1st President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad visited this place to lay foundation stone for Mahavir Center . Many development activities are planned here. A miraculous idol of Bhagwaan Mahavir found from the nearby Lake named "52 pokhar talab" has been installed here. Many non-jains also visit this place with lot of devotion. Google map shows Vaishali village.
