Kuruma is a Buddhist archaeological site in Konark. It is around 7Kms from Konark on the left side about 2km at Konark-Kakatpur road. Although the idol is placed inside a temple but it's inadequate for a place with such historical value. One can also see the boundaries of an ancient building here. The ones with a fascination for ancient history should surely visit this very small yet fascinating site on their visit to Konark.

As I told many times, Odisha is reluctant to preserve its ancient historic monuments and assets. Kuruma Buddhist Archaeological site is also an ancient site but neither having preservation nor getting any recognition. The whole site is getting filled with Bush, jungle, cowdung and dustbins. Even the buddist statues are preserved with the temple but Shiva is being worshipped there. Odisha govt. Kindly preserve all these sites. These having lots of historic value kindly google it ...

This is a small renovated Buddhist site which lies inside the small village of Kuruma, at just a 2km detour on Konark-Kakatpur route, 6kms from Konark. It has a huge pond in the foreground. There is no info signage about the site's history, and the locals have no clue too. However there is a renovated or maybe a fresh constructed structure which houses the old Lord Buddha idol which is being worshipped as a ritual. Couldn't get hold of the priest to know more about it. The site structure looks somewhat tantric to me, but i have no confirmation on it yet and my knowledge about the connection between Buddhism & Tantrism is limited. Structure is strewn with overgrown bushes, surrounded by Village homes with no safety boundary to define or demarcate or to keep the structure safe. It was lined with cow dung cakes to be dried as locals have well access to it and maybe not sensitive enough to understand the importance. The maximum duration spent would not be more than 15mins unless you are an architect/ structural analyst/ research scholar.

Site seems to be Neglected by the ASI deliberately...could be treasure trove of Buddhist past of India...this buddha idol was found in the pond nearby.
