Kote Shri Prasanna Venkataramana Swami Temple - Featured Reviews (1121)
Suddenly decided to visit this temple on one of the days of Navaratri. It's in Kalasipalya area. Quite an ancient temple which dates back to 1695 British era! Credit goes to Wodeyars of erstwhile Mysore State for this temple construction. After going through the main door, front view appears so grand including the 'dwaja sthambha'. Temple is quite spacious inside. Main deity is Shree Kote Venkataramana Swamy accompanied by Devi Padmavathi within the premises. Even Lord Hanuman, Navagrahas and other deities are installed. All the deities are beautiful. There's an information plate installed by Department of Archaeology which gives lot of other information (photo added). Overall it was nice experience.
Beautiful Venkateshwara Temple built in 1689 in Dravidian style by King Chikka Devraja Wodeyar the then ruler of Mysore state. There are many later additions. Temple has many interesting and beautiful carvings. Annual celebrations are held in Vaikuntha Ekadasi. 3 km from Bangalore City Station. Adjacent building of the temple is Summer Palace of Tipu Sultan. Bangalore Fort and Lal Bag are nearby. An interesting statue is of Buddha having 4 arms/hands one of which holds Gada or mace, which seems inappropriate considering Buddha preached nonviolence. A board in the hall gives full info. about the temple.
Neatly maintained temple. It has a history of 330 Years from chickadeva Raja to Tipu Sultan to East India Company to Mysore Kingdom. Things shouldn't be missed while visiting the temple. 1, Sculpture depicting Girija Kalyana in the outer wall of the shrine. 2, Four Yazhi pillars in the inner shrine. 3, Mirror room seva. 4. "Gandaberunda" - The Royal Insignia of Mysore Kingdom. It is carved as a lock in the chariot room doors. 5. Bullet mark in the huge pillar in front of the temple next to the road. That bullet was aimed for Tipu Sultan by Lord Cornwallis the then viceroy of India During the Company rule.
The late 17th century Venkataramana temple is located near the old fort ("fort" is kote in Kannada language) adjacent to what was once the residence of Mysore Wodeyar royal family, and later became the palace of Tipu Sultan, a later ruler of the Mysore Kingdom. The temple consists of a sanctum (garbhagriha) which is connected to a central hall (mantapa) by a vestibule. The walls of the sanctum and vestibule (antechamber) are plain but for a row of deity sculptures in frieze at the base. On the whole the temple exudes modest decorative work and follows the general plan used in the temples within the palace complex in Mysore. The hall ceiling is supported by pillars that have "clusters of colonettes" alternating with yalis (mythical beasts from Hindu legend) in all four directions. This appears on each of the central columns. The main festival celebrated here is Vaikuntha Ekadashi when thousands of devotees throng the temple.

All the rituals are done here and one can book for kalyanothsava, archana , abhishekam etc in advance by contacting the temple management.
The flagstone pillar outside the temple was damaged during the 'Siege of Bangalore' on 21 March 1791. There was a cannon ball mark halfway up the pillar. The cannon ball was fired by Lord Cornwallis' British Army at Tipu Sultan's Army. The flagstone has now been replaced. Couldn't the pillar have been strengthened with the cannon ball mark?
