The town is famous for its torans, a pair of 12th century columns supporting an arch, about 40 feet tall built in red and yellow sandstone, just north of the walled town. They stand majestically on the bank of Sharmistha Talav, on a road going down from Arjun Bari. They are among the few surviving examples of the entrance gates, once a regular feature of the architecture of Gujarat in the Solanki period. The carving style is similar to the Rudra Mahalaya at Sidhpur. Perhaps erected after a war victory, the architecture is embellished with carvings of battle and hunting scenes. The one to the east is in better condition and has been used as a symbol of Gujarat in recent times. The torans might have served as an entrance to a large temple complex, but there are no remains found here

Kirti Toran is located in Vadnagar. Everyone knows Vadnagar as the birthplace of the Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi, which is located in Mehsana District in North Gujarat. The town was also known as Anartapura or Anandpura. I didn't know it's historical significance till I visited the town. Vadnagar was surrounded by a wall and six gates. The 40 ft tall entrance gate like structure is amazing which is on a pair of columns supporting an arch, built on the bank of Sharmishta talav or lake. The structure is made from red and yellow sandstone. This was built in 12th century. There was no information provided at the site and it was left for the visitors to figure out by themselves. These are the entrance gates but they are not connected to any kind of wall and look independent structure. I couldn't find the remains or ruins of the nearby structure for which this acted as entrance gates which are intact. The carvings depict the battle and hunting scenes, which indicates that they may be erected after a war victory. This looks beautiful in the clear blue sky. We had to drive through the narrow paved roads in the old town, sometimes too crowded. We had to stop the car in the narrow lanes to pass the incoming vehicles. I heard about lot of development taking place in Vadnagar, but the roads are too narrow in the old town, which is hard or impossible to widen.

This is a beautiful historical place.....it's pillars and thin sculpture in it makes it beautiful. You can click beautiful pictures there preferably in the morning or evening hours. This place is adjoining residential area and activities otherwise such a calm and beautiful. Nice murals carved at this archeological structure, both the entrance, huge gates look splendid and photogenic The nearby houses depict historical setup as well. The city appears just as ancient, yet modern with the narrow lanes/gullies with the drainage system all along houses and inner roads The famous Sharmishtha lake is nearby but not well kept as it's mostly used by local ladies for bath, washing clothes and the place is also not unkempt.

Google Maps accurately takes you to the historical site. As of end July 2018, a cement road leading up to the site is being built, so you will have to park/get down a few hundred meters away and walk. Looks like the tourism department is working on cleaning up the surrounding area and promoting the place; one hopes that they provide some information about the structures. There are two pillar structures, both have steps leading up to them. This, they are not accessible for people with disabilities. People live in the vicinity, so please be mindful of that fact.

KIRTI TORAN If there is any beautiful art form not only for Vadnagar or Gujarat but for the whole of India which can take pride in its art, it is the glorious toran of Vadnagar. It is popularly known as Narasimha Mehta's theft. These victory arches, known as Kirti Torans, stand tall on the western shores of Lake Sharmishtha, evoking Vadnagar's history. These stunning columns, which stand 40 feet tall and support an arch, are a sight to behold. Red and yellow sandstone were used to construct them. Solanki torans, or entrance gates, are said to be a common part of their construction. Battle and hunting scenes are engraved into them. These torans in Vadnagar are recognised as the official symbol of Gujarat due to their splendor and historical significance. Some people believe that these torans are part of a large temple complex, although no further ruins have been discovered nearby to support this theory. Don't forget to visit this wonderful place.
