This oldest landmark was once a swamp land, and it was believed that big snakes and dragons use to dwell here and people were afraid to go and see such big snakes under the muddy water. Later on this place dried up and was considered a sacred place and people started to worship this huge tree. Slowly the place became famous landmark known as khongnang ani Karak. Being a main traffic point you can go to NH-2 which was earlier known as NH-39 towards Kohima, dimapur. From the other point it gets connected to NH-202 which goes towards jessami road, imphal-moreh road renamed as NH-102, likewise NH-37 Imphal jiribam highway as earlier known as NH-53. These point is under construction in order to make a big nice road since it's an important landmark now however I wish they can keep the tree as it is and keep it alive as a lot of people have feelings for this tree including me and being a sacred place i wish government can encircle this tree in a confine area to protect since it's in the middle of the four way road and still the road will be big and beautiful. Since it under construction there is full of dust and smoke when vehicles passes by but hope to see this sacred place very clean sometime soon.
Landmark site. There used to be two ancient sacred fig (khongnang) trees here, which gave the place it's name, that were abruptly chopped down one evening out of the blue for "beautification purposes" it seems, under the direction of some less-than-sensible minister. The present traffic point is an eye sore, the earlier roundabout was much more practical in managing the traffic.
This is one of the best market places in Imphal city for apparel, electrical stores, home appliances, vegetables, meats, etc. There are several hotels and lodges... ISBT is located here and transport connectivity is one of the best. Vishal Mega Mart is also located here.
