In all probability, the Kavil Bhagavathy temple traces its origins to the family deity of "Changanassery Idam", a branch of the Thekkamkoor Royal family, a thousand years back. Though the Thekkamkoor Royals were vanquished by King Marthanda Varma of Travancore in the 10th C AD, the temple survived the social upheavals. The temple was given its present form by Thekkamkoor Udaya Marthandavarma Rajah nearly 900 years back. Today this ancient temple is one of the major temples under the Travancore Devaswom Board. Bhadrakali is the chief deity. The temple exudes an atmosphere of peace and quiet and great "shanthi" though hardly a stone's throw from the busy city centre.
