Great archeological site to visit. Well maintained. But they didn't accept cash for the tickets. They only accept money by online mode only. Which is a bad thing. There are also people who doesn't know how to pay by online mode. How will they visit the place then?

Hi, This place is named as Kareng Ghar in Sivsagar,Assam build by Ahom Kingdom. I have visited many times to Sivsagar before but since this place is at Nazira and road was bad during that time I have not visited it. Recently I have visited this place found best place as a tourist spot. The road from Sivsagar town to Nazira side the still not good side by side. I recommend you to visit this place for 2 hours including journey. Entry fees is very less and that should be directly paid to Archeological survey of India through online mode only . No cash facilities available for entry fees.

Kareng Ghar, also known as The Garhgaon Palace, is a magnificent historical monument nestled in the heart of Garhgaon, just 15 kilometers away from the Sivasagar district of Assam. This splendid four-storied building stands tall, organized in receding tiers that add to its grandeur. The top floor boasts a dome-like roof, culminating in a chamber, exuding an aura of regality and charm. The palace is adorned with four majestic gates, famously referred to as the 'Singhaduar' or the 'Lion's Gate,' welcoming visitors to a bygone era of splendor and cultural heritage. It is said that a concealed underground tunnel connects Kareng Ghar to the enchanting 'Talatal Ghar' in Rangpur, situated across the serene Dikhow River, adding an element of mystery and intrigue to its historical significance. Reaching this architectural marvel is quite convenient. For air travel, the closest airport is Rowriah in Jorhat, approximately 65 kilometers away, providing a comfortable 2 to 2.5-hour drive to Garhgaon. Alternatively, the Mohanbari airport in Dibrugarh, located 90 kilometers from Sivasagar, serves as another accessible gateway. Sivasagar is also well-connected by bus, making it easily accessible by road. If you prefer traveling by train, the nearest railway station is Simalguri, conveniently situated around 16 kilometers from the town. From Simalguri, taxis are readily available to transport you to Sibsagar, and the fare is about 200 INR. To explore the historical wonder of Kareng Ghar, you can visit between 9 am and 5.30 pm, allowing ample time to immerse yourself in the rich heritage and architectural brilliance of this breathtaking palace. The visit promises to be a delightful journey back in time, offering an unforgettable experience that will leave you in awe of the opulence and cultural significance of Assam's past.

The Kareng Ghar, also known as Garhgaon Palace, is located at Garhgaon and is one of the grandest examples of Ahom Architecture. It was the Central Administrative building of the Gargaon Capital. It was originally wooden built upto the reign of Swargadeo Pramatta Singha, 1751 AD. But Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha built the present permanent structure in 1752 AD with seven storied palace made of bricks and boulders. The monument is four- storied building and arranged in gradually receding tiers. The top floor has dome like roof with a chamber. It had four watch towers originally of which now only two can be seen. The ground floor has three west facing halls and provided with a front and rear chamber. The palace was well secured by digging canals around it and then building fort like walls on the canals bank with soil, which is called 'Garh'. The place was named as Gargaon after the huge 'garh'. There were four main gates to the palace called as 'Singhduar'(Lion's Gate). There believed to be a secret underground tunnel from Kareng Ghar to 'Talatal Ghar' in Rangpur which is many kilometers away from this and across the Dikhow river. The plethora of architectural heritage dating back to the Ahom reign could be Assam's claimant for a World Heritage Site tag. The group of monuments spread over Sivasagar district bears testimony to the rich heritage of the Ahom kingdom. There are no parallels in the country like the Ahom monuments.
