An absolutely lovely stay overlooking the Dal Lake yet far away from noisy tourists. A great place to stay if you like homely, well curated meals, smiling staff, a bit of history and peace and quiet. The food was delicious, the detailing and care in every little thing was indicative of how well trained the staff is and we felt like we were staying at the home of a distant relative. We will return again soon for a winter holiday and we highly reccomend this place for anyone who appreciates a taste of heritage and culture.

We had a wonderful stay. The hotel is magical and has a lot of history and culture in it's fold. The entire staff was extremely courteous and welcoming.

Kashmir is truly paradise on earth and Karan Mahal is the pinnacle of this heaven. From the GM , Aditya , to all the staff were just excellent, gracious hosts . We truly felt were the Maharaja and Maharani. We strongly recommend this and will certainly be back

While the property is lovely and the staff is generally friendly, the manager, Aqib, and housekeeping team were not up to mark for a five-star property. After paying US$400 per night (INR 32,000+), the hotel provided cheap Dettol handwash soap in a dispenser in the room bathrooms; when asked about it, Aqib claimed that Dettol was part of their "non-existent" COVID Compliance. Any COVID protocol only calls for handwash, not specifically the harsh Dettol soap. The other bath amenities were fabulously sourced from luxurious Ayurveda brand, Forest Essentials. I wonder why they cut corners to provide run-of-mill Dettol handwash, which isn't recommended by dermatologists, contrary to popular belief. Rooms provided RO (Reverse Osmosis) water in refilled glass bottles. That was absurd, too. It seems like cutting corners is the game at this unique property with so many exquisite charms. Our group had three US Citizens, none were comfortable with the idea of water in rooms dispensed in recycled glass bottles without a seal. The manager didn't bother listening to our request for bottled water, so we bought our own for the three rooms we stayed in for two nights on the on-set of our Kashmir holiday. The food was nice, but not quite exceptional/old Maharaja recipes. There was abundant wastage of food as they laid out a full buffet for our family of five. Most of the food was untouched and some of the food we just sampled. They would've been better off taking a la carte orders for their inclusive dinner and breakfast offering. Morning breakfast was even more a waste than the dinner buffet as most of us just enjoyed cereal, an egg of choice, and toast. We didn't touch the Indian breakfast on the buffet, which was sadly made for us. We were the only ones staying at the property during our visit, except for one night there was another guest from Bangalore, who we invited to join us for drinks and dinner. The real tickler about the total lack of customer service was at departure, the bell boy came to collect my luggage and as we were exiting my room, I picked up the 'Conde Nast Traveler' magazine placed in my room to take with me to read at our next destination. The bell boy rudely asked if I was going to take the magazine with me; to which I obviously replied yes. When I got to the front to head to the car with the rest of my family, the manager, Aqib, demanded me to return the magazine I had in my hand bag as he had learned from the bell boy that I had taken the magazine. I was shocked and aghast. Aqib went on to belittle me and made me feel like I was a some cheap thief for taking the magazine placed in my room, which most hotels leave for their guests to read/keep. He went on to say that the magazines were for use in-house only and that they didn't have sufficient copies if I took the INR 200 magazine. I tried to explain to Aqib that wanted the magazine as reading material for our next destination, Pahalgam, but he wouldn't have it and kept saying that he will mail me a copy to my Mumbai address. I can certainly afford to purchase any magazine and wouldn't need Karan Mahal to send me a copy to my home address. The point was that the magazine was left in rooms for guests to read and/or assume to keep per one's discretion and that I had wanted to take my copy to read while in Kashmir, not to take home as a keepsake. RIDICULOUS! A few other incidents that took us by surprise, too, but due to word constraints for the review I can not share. I would definitely stay at The Lalit, Qayaam Gha, Taj Vivanta, Gurkha/ITC Houseboats, Hotel Dar Es Salaam (all properties I have experienced over my multiple trips to Kashmir) or another property rather than Karan Mahal till they invest in improved customer experiences by way of etiquette coaching and customer service training for the entire staff.

Location is lovely and rooms r comfortable. Found a bit impersonal attitude of the staff and the manager We were charged exhorbitant amount of rs.3600 for 2 cups if tea ordered in the room. Considering the high tariff of rooms consider inappropriate. No staff was around to say good bye when we left leave aline asking us if our stay was pleasant. This was disappointing to say the least.

One of the best holiday experiences I have had ever. The best view one can have in Srinagar. Beautiful property and fantastic staff. All guests are really treated with a lot of warmth. Mr Aqib was very helpful from the moment we stepped in to the property till the time we checked out. Overall a fantastic experience. Will definitely miss this place.
