Kamandurg (Vasai, Dist. Thane) Type Giridurg.. height Height 652 m. from sea level. Nearest village kaman queue- Tungareshwar. Way - Thane- Bhiwandi- Kaman Kaman village is on the road from Bhiwandi to Vasai. Kaman village can also be reached from Mumbai- Ahmedabad route. There is a trail leading from Kaman village to Kamandurga. There is also a railway from Bhiwandi to Parol. Kamandurga can also be climbed from Kuhe village on this route. There is no water in the fort. No place to stay. As the fort is high, one can see a wide area from Thane to Dharavi.
Kamandurg is one of the hidden gems for trekkers. It's within the Tungareshwar green zone. During monsoon the whole area becomes lush green. Trekking to Kamandurg fort is easy to medium rated and even beginners can trek this place. It's easily accessible via public transport. Take a train till Vasai road station and either take Biwandi ST bus and get down at kaman stop or goto Kaman road station from Vasai on Diva route and take share rickshaw from the station. Base village of this trek is just about 3km inside from the kaman bus stop. So if u r taking a public transport you will have to walk it down till base village as no transport will be available for last 3km distance. If you are going in private car then you can go all the way to the base village. There are lot of parking space there. Trekking to Kamandurg fort will take about 3 to 3 &1/2 hrs depending upon your speed. Kamandurg is not a very popular tourist destination so you won't find any crowd there. So it's a very peaceful place. You will see mountains all around. Walk through the jungle is quite an experience. Pls do carry 2-3 ltrs of water per head and enough food as once you cross the base village you won't get anything. Do jump in the river after completing the trek at base village and also don't forget to eat hot vada paav and bhajji paav after completing your trek. It's one of the finest trekking location so close to Mumbai. It's an ideal one day trekking place. You will see all shades of green all around during monsoon.
The trek is amazing however i highly recommend that do not go for the trek in rainy season. Climbing steep rocks would be difficult in mansoon. Please carry water bottle and first aid kit with you.The jungle area is tricky to find the correct path. You can easily get lost so Keep looking for red clothes which are tied on plants and check for white arrows which are present on rocks. The place is not for beginners. We have to cross 3 moutains to reach on the top and it would roughly take 3 to 4 hrs on single side. Stay safe keep trekking!
A proper trek for all the trek lovers A medium type trek to the top view The road is through dense forest but the locals offer help( do take it ) so that you don't get lost Once you reach the top the view is damn beautiful Don't forget to taste the pure mountain water
A very rare gem which is close by to Mumbai. The base/starting village is Kuhe. Ask for directions once you are close. (Don't follow Google maps till the very end). There's a washroom at the base village too. As others have mentioned, take lots of water. Definitely take help of local for the way up top, coz there's literally nothing to help you get directions. Ask for Prathamesh - a 15 year old kid who knows his way around and can give you route options. We were just 5 of us for the entire hike. Difficulty level is definitely more than intermediate, and i can imagine it to be a bit risky in monsoon, coz of the terrain and some routes which were right at the edge. Took almost 3 hours for us to reach to the top. But the view was definitely worth it. There's some tree-shade where you can rest up and have a victory nap. Pro Tip for any hike - take extra pair of shoes lol. One of my friend's shoes came off, and he had a REALLY difficult time getting down.
It's a cool place, I suggest going as early as possible if you plan to climb the whole way up. Cause climbing during noon is very difficult. We couldn't get up to the top, we didn't have enough supplies or time, you need lots of water, glucond-d, some lite snacks and if you are planning on going all the way to the top. Go early enough to reach the top before noon, there's no canteen or anything so carry what you need and don't litter. For a souvenir I picked up a bamboo, the native people were really nice and helpful, when you are starting the climb there are many different paths that goes to dead-ends, so maybe ask anyone around they will give you directions. Hopefully I can get to the top next time.
Kamandurg stands tall and proud to be the second highest fort in Thane district and still has some signs of the ancient times. This fort is special in its own way by having a gradual steep climb of about 2.30 hrs through dense forest, rock cut steps but in spite of that is rarely visited. Kamandurg played an important role during the battle of Vasai and the main aim it was built for was to keep an eye on the trade carried through Ulhas river. A reference to this fort can be found in "Mahakavti Bakhar" of the 11th century which states it as "Kamvandurg". This fort was built to protect the trade route of Ulhas river from Kalyan creek port. In 1683, Sambhaji Maharaj won this fort from the Portuguese and later on 12th September, 1685 they won it back. Due to non availability of adequate water on the fort, the Portuguese had to abandon the fort. During the Peshwa-Portuguese war of 1737, Shankarji Keshav wrote a letter to the Peshwas to rehabilitate the fort as its location is quite crucial standing very near to the Portuguese land and it can be used to keep a hold on the Kalyan-Bhiwandi route. Later, two water tanks were built and the old ones were repaired which made the fort fit for rehabilitation.
Medium trekk .. 3 hrs climb.. dont try it in rainy season.. beautiful view
