I had been looking forward to visit the Kallil Bhagavati Temple, near Perumbavoor, in Kerala, for long. It was made possible only the other day, and it was worth the wait. The temple, built into a single piece of boulder, is awe-inspiring. The temple structure is believed to date back to the third century BC, according to some experts, with some of them saying that it could have been a Jain place of worship where monks used to do penance once. There are some other temples in Kerala too having Jain and Buddhist features, which leads to a theory that Jainism and Buddhism were once being followed by a considerable section of the population.
This is a wonderful rich site. Kallil temple, as they say is where history and mystery rest on great stones. Before you go read something of the history as it was a Jain Temple in the early days but in the 9th Century it became the Bhagwati temple. And that is where the legend of the beautiful woman and the stones plays out and gives a context to the amazing features. Well worth the effort of about a 30km drive from Angamaly as we did.
Calm and divine place. A place with lot of greenery and pure air. The roof of the Temple is made with a big single rock. You will be amazed to see how this temple is formed.
The shrine is a wonder that is under a big hanging rock. We can see a wall constructed around the shrine but that is recently constructed one and actually not bearing any load. The main festival is on trikarthika which comes in the karthika day of Vrischika month if malayalam calendar (karthikai masam of tamil calendar). A number of rock carvings we can see here in the temple premise. Elephant, shank(sea shell), swan etc are there. Some shastha like carving also there, when checked in google comes to know that some people believe it as jaina. Its nearer to perumbavoor town. A wild ambience is there everywhere around the temple. And near by must visit place is Iringol kavu durga temple. Its a forest temple dedicated to godess Durga. Only 20 minute travel from kallil bhagavathi temple to iringol kavu. From iringol kavu if we travel less than 1km we can visit Nagasseri mana-children's park. There is an entry free of Rs20 for adults and Rs10 for a child.
Very good temple who like to get some privacy and peace of mind . Really calm and quite place without any rush .
The Kallil Bhagwati Temple located at Perumbavoor Medala is a place where faith and nature meet. This goddess temple with daily worship is located in a huge rock gorge. The natural scenery around will satisfy the devotees and tourists. The Kallil Guha Temple at Metala, which later became the Bhagavathy Temple, is a relic of Jainism that once existed in the Perumbavoor area. The temple is situated between huge rocks. Although the deity is Bhagavati, Jain figures carved into the rock can still be seen. Kallil is a place of historical and archeological importance rather than a goddess temple
