Closed Airport and damaged runway!
IMD meteorological office working here
Whenever I surpass this barren field, I throw my sight at it, the trace of the runway is still found, once a functional building now an abundant pieces of bricks and cement. I guess many decades may have passed but history speaks the importance of this airfield, if government fails to restart it atleast an Airforce station can come into existence.
Should be shifted to another suitable location in the proximity of township to avoid the great loss due to occurrence of future flood.
Surrounded by wonderful view. Runway is short. Was used by Airforce during Indo- Pak war. If renovated, would be definitely wonderful.
Till 1990 Comercial Air Services are there but there is currently no scheduled commercial air service to this airport.
Only government Use as a Emergency Helipad
closed air strip suitable for small planes. currently in worn out condition needs maintenance before being able to use for small planes.
If it is reopen soon that will be best for locals who use to stay outside from this town for their communication.
Very beautiful and eye catching to say the least.Once functional and a very important Airport in the Indo-Pak war of 1971, this airport is located at the foot-plains of Raghunandan Hill range (famous for its 7th century rock-cut bas relief monument known as UNAKOTI) on one side and Manu river on the other. The veiw of the Hill range from the airfield is just awesome. Abandoned ATC, staff quarters, godowns, runways, boundaries and some other buildings still having broken signboards of Airport Authority of India and 'Vayuyaan' the government of India company whose flights used to operate from here, till tell the tales of this once very important Airport for the region. Also that the structures being still more or less intact shows the hope of the people of this city to see this airport busy with planes again.
Good news is Govt of India has decided to restart the airport under UDAAN scheme, which will definitely help the people of this region along with a few parts of southern Assam with a better connectivity with the rest of the country. As almost 30percent of traffic in Agartala airport is from this region so people might expect the airport to restart soon as it is a feasible project at least as per the statistics, subjected to technical clearances and of course availability of extra land, which still remains a hurdle for development of the region.
