Great place to visit snd to know the history of Shivaji Maharaj.
Birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and junnar located in foothills of Shivneri is very rich in culture and nice place.
Shivneri got its name as it was under the possession of the Yadavas of Devagiri. This fort was mainly used to guard the old trading route from Desh to the port city of Kalyan. The place passed on to the Bahmani Sultanate after the weakening of Delhi Sultanate during the 15th century and it then passed on to the Ahmadnagar Sultanate in the 16th century. In 1595, a Maratha chief named Maloji Bhonsle, the grandfather of Shivaji Bhosale, was enabled by the Ahmadnagar Sultan, Bahadur Nizam Shah and he gave him Shivneri and Chakan. Shivaji was born at the fort on 19 February 1630, and spent his childhood there. Inside the fort is a small temple dedicated to goddess Shivai Devi, after whom Shivaji was named.
Fairly well maintained fort. Easy steps and plain footpaths all the way till the top. Should be easy for healthy adults too. Takes about 1 hour 10 minutes with 4-5 halts of 5 minutes along the way with moderate climbing speed.
Things to see -
Most past structures on the fort are reduced to mere residue. Only structures that are intact or renovated are - Shivai temple midway, few Buddhist caves near Shivai temple, then a structure at the top where a cradle (paalnnaa) is kept to signify that Maharaj was born here, a Kadelot point at the end of the hilltop from where city of Junnar can be seen.
Notes:
1. There are no eateries allowed at the top. Drinking water tanks are available at the top only. So ensure to take along any food items and water if required.
2. Toilet block is available on the way to Shivai temple. There is one more at the top but it seemed to be for VIPs, and appeared closed when we visited.
3. Weekends witness quite a few school trips and so students queue up everywhere after 12 PM. So make sure to reach at least by 10 AM to the fort so as to climb and reach to the top by around 11 AM.
4. Car/bike parking is available along the road to the fort but its hassle-free.
Fort Charges: Rs50; for maintenance of the fort which go to Archaeological Survey of India.
