Junagadh Buddhist Cave - Historical place museum in Junagadh - Junagadh, India

It's in the Uperkot forte Junaghadh . It's entry fee is nominal 20 Rs per person , on line on the entry gate of this cave. It's made in 3-4 th century AD by Empire Ashok . It's in East waste direction, made from living rock. It is very nicely planned according to the need of Budhdhist monks . It has 2 stories dawn . The upper exposed area has many digged areas for water storage. There are three sections in it. One is for bath , one is for cooking and eating, one is for rest and meditation.

he Buddhist caves of Junagadh are also a reflection of a time, way back in history, lost in stacks of events, for their artistry and monumental structures. Contrary to popular belief as the name suggests, the Junagadh Caves unlike other naturally occurring caves is a complex system of manmade enclosures carved out for the residential purposes of Buddhist monks who chose to lead a celibate life of abstinence. Dating back as far as 1st century AD, a reference time frame for contemporary existence of these caves is during Emperor Asoka's reign, when foreign spiritual influences were said to be pervading India in essence and display.

Uparkot Caves are 2nd-3rd century Buddhist caves located in the Uparkot fort. It is double storey cave complex used by Buddhist monks during ancient times. This is rock cut group if caves. Caves are exquisitely carved pillars & decorative designs having an animal figures etc. It is well maintained by ASI. There is entry fee. Photographs & video shooting is allowed.

These caves located at Uperkot beyond the 300 feet deep moat, close to Adi Kadi vav, were carved in 2nd-3rd century A.D. These caves have influence of Satvahana architecture with combination of Graeco- Scythian style. According to ASI "The cave group is in three tiers, with all members of each galleries shown in semi-relief, but only two storeys having regular floors. The upper floor has a deep tank, covered on three sides with verandahs and Kakshasana on west and north- west side. Lower floor has with corridor and pillars. The lower floor has exquisitely carved pillars whose base, shaft and capital carry unique decorative design."These caves are gilded with beautiful pillars and entrances, water cisterns, horseshoe shaped chaitya windows, an assembly hall and cell for meditation.

Junagadh Cave Groups are located in Junagadh district of the Indian state of Gujarat. These caves group includes Uparkot Caves, Khapra Kodiya Caves and Baba Pyare Caves. Three separate sites of rooms carved out of stone to be used as monks' quarters. These caves were carved starting from Emperor Ashoka's period up to 1st-4th century AD.

Excellent historical place to be with children, friends and family members. The structure of the whole fort is very inspiring. It's made very minutely and logically. Parking facility is also available here. Every monument in this fort has its own history and inspiration. I request everyone to visit this fort once in their life.
