Jor Bangla Temple - Hindu temple in Bishnupur - Bankura, India

The Jor Bangla Temple in Bishnupur was built by King Raghunath Singha Dev II in the year 1655 CE. It is one of the few temples of Bishnupur which is in good condition. It is richly ornamented with terracotta carvings. The temple is known for its classic chala style of Bengal architecture.

Jor-bangla temple, also called Keshta Rai Temple, has a typical architecture that is found in the southern part of Bengal. The temple was built by Malla King Raghunath Singha (pronunciation: sing-ho) in c.1655. The structure resembles two traditional 'do-chala' village huts put together side by side. One of them serves as a porch and the other, which is behind the former, serves as a shrine. The curved roof of this pair of huts is surmounted by a 'char-chala sikhara'. The base of the temple is a square of size 11.8m X 11.48m, and the height above the platform is 10.7m. The walls are decorated mostly with terracotta panels describing scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata along with floral and geometrical patterns. In fact, the details are so rich it narrates the whole story visually.

This temple of magnificent architecture was established by Mallaraj I Raghunath Singh in 1655 AD. It consists of two gabled cottages connected to each other and there is a four-gabled peak in the middle of the connected part. Hence the name of the temple is Jorbangla temple. Around the temple, the stories of Ramayana-Mahabharata, hunting scenes, scenes of social life have been beautifully depicted by the artists.

Jor bangla temple is an ancient temple and famous for it's opulent terracotta structure and delicate carvings on the walls. The visitors can get the entry tickets for all the Bishnupur temples from Rasmancha including this one. Else, visitors are not allowed to enter inside the temple. The timing of the temple is from 6 AM - 6 PM.

Traditionally known as 'Kestaraya', this temple is famous for its structural features and exquisite TERRACOTTA embellishments. This temple was declared a monument of national importance vide BG.4063, dated 18.08.1913
