Patan was the capital of Gujarat for 650 years, from 745 to 1411 CE. It was also a thriving centre of Jainism. The Rani-ki-Vav or The Queen's stepwell was built by Queen Udaymati in memory of her late husband king Bhima I. It is the only monument in Gujarat built by a queen in memory of her husband.. The Rani-ki-Vav remained largely buried under massive silting deposits, barely apparent but never lost in time. It is a monument of national importance protected by ASI [Archeological Survey of India]. It is also listed as the World Heritage Site UNESCO.
