Jahangir Mahal : Gwalior Fort - Historical landmark in Gwalior - Gwalior, India

The Palaces known as Jehangir Mahal and Shahjehan Mahal were constructed in the Mughal period during the time of Jehangir (1605-1627A.D.) and Shahjehan (1627-1658A.D.). Both palaces are located on the same campus, having a large courtyard. These palaces are the best specimen of Mughal Architectural style, having arched doors, carving, and Jali decoration. One entrance to campus opens to the Jauhar Kund and the other to the Vikram Mahal.

Jahangir Mahal is the Mahal named after the Mughal emperor Jahangir. The mahal is also called the Sher Mandir as it was made by the ruler Sher Shah Suri who had defited the Mughal emperor Humayun. It was later renowated by Jahangir that is why it has gots it name Jahangir Mahal. To the north-east of the mahal is the Shah Jahan Mahal which was made by Jahangi. The mahal is wide and has beautiful wall carvings.

The place is well maintained in terms of cleanliness but, lacks many basic infrastructure for tourists. The toilets are like any public toilets in India. Most of the high walls and stairs miss the safety guards/railings. Tourists have to walk through on their own with no specific walkways. Outdated signboards and instructions will leave the tourists dependent on random locals pretending to be the 'guides'. The one we hired charged us Rs611 for a tour of about 30 minutes and spoke only about a masala-fied version of history which appeared like a long silly WhatsApp forward.

Built in the 17th century AD, the architecture is marvelous. This is a 3 storied structure, some places the steps are too steep need to take care while taking the stairs. The entry fee is 10 rupees, the architecture and the designs are just marvelous. Take your time and spend time in this marvelous place n get some fabulous photos clicked.

It is a part of Gwalior Fort.The present fort has a defensive structure and two main palaces, Gujari Mahal and Mann Mandir, which is built by Man Singh Tomar. Gujari Mahal Mahal was built for Queen Mraganayani. It is now an archaeological museum. The second oldest record of "zero" in the world was found in a small temple, located on the top of the road. This inscription is about 1500 years old.

Jahangir Mahal was constructed in 17th century by King Bir Singh Deo. Attractive architecture with bold & delicate lines. Inner rooms are not in good shape & needs attention. Views from balconies are magnificent. Noons are hot here.
