Irukkangudi Mariyamman Temple - Hindu temple in Irukkankudi, Nenmeni - Virudhunagar, India

Mariamman Temple is a Hindu temple in Irukkankudi near Sattur, Virudhunagar District,Tamil Nadu. This temple was built over 300 years ago as per the history. The sanctum sanctorum is under a vimana. The Artha Mandap and Maha Mandap are close to the sanctum. Sri Nandeeswara and flag post-Kodimaram are in a line. Lord Vinayaka is under the Arasa Maram. On the west are Vazha Vandha Amman and Rakachi Amman. Pechi Amman and Muppidari Amman are in separate shrines on the northwest. Kathavarayan and Vairavamurthi are in the east. Karuppusami is in the southeast corner. Devotees worship all these deities and Mariamman in order. I have been visiting this temple since childhood for more than 25+ years now. We as a family have a strong attachment to this temple and Amman and never forget to visit her at least once a year. The infrastructure of this temple has not kept the pace with the other famous temples. I hope the management takes some action faster and improves the infrastructure faster. Everyone should visit this temple at least once and get the blessings of Mariamman. Om Shakti.

After having a wonderful darshan in Sri.Vaithiyanatha Swamy temple, we drove down to this temple which was on the other side of the highway, all the time we were keeping our eyes on the watch, to make sure, we reached the temple in time. Came to know about this temple, when i was browsing and i was kind of stunned to know that they have constructed this temple in the middle of the river bed. Agreed the river is dry now, but happens if there is a flood or something. Reaching the temple was kind of tough since narrow roads , railway track crossing etc. Reached the temple and we were surprised that there was so much crowd in the temple, and it was very noisy with children crying, shouting etc and utter chaos inside with barricades everywhere. Mariamman is housed in a separate sannadhi, facing west i guess. We were forced to take the special enterance and even that was very crowded. some how managed to have a good darshan of mariamman and we came out. We couldnt take any decent photos inside since there was utter chaos everywhere. Definitely worth a visit if you are in this area.

People have option for special darshan also with Rs30/person. People can pay and take bath. Can prepare sweet Pongal for prasadam. Better to carry your own ingredients. It's too costly over there. Better to carry own pooja things.

It is vice-versa here. Legend and Stories ? This temple is located between the two rivers Vaipparu and Arjuna. As two Ganges meet here it got its name Irukkangudi. River Arjuna flowing in the Northern part of this temple originates at Mahalinga hills known as Vathira Iruppu hills in the west. According to "Thiruthankal Temple Lore" once upon a time when Pancha Pandavas came here, Arjuna prayed to Goddess Ganga and split the earth with 'Varunakanai'(arrow) forming a river. The river formed as a result came to be known as Arjuna river. ? River Vaipparu flows in the Southern part of this temple. According to Uthira Kandam of Epic Ramayana. A hunter named Sambukan indulged in deep penance amidst fire in the Northern part of Sivasailam at the foot of Podhigai hills. As a result a Brahman died at Ayodhi. Sri Raman, king of Ayodya killed Sambukan and brought back the Brahman to life.

Heavy crowd.Devotees worshipped mariamman in somany ways to show their devotion to god viz; firechatti,mavilakku, hair donations,dancing with melams etc. Good arrangements inside the temple to worship mariamman. The way to the temple via riverbed was fully encroached by the merchants, & open bathing arrangements. police protection is good. Cleanliness is bad outside.
