Ilambazar Wood Fossil Park - Park in Lakshmipur - Birbhum, India

The ambience is awesome, not only science, one can encounter ethnic people and their diverse culture. The park has written guides about fossils and fossilisation but the identity of each item is not written, which is a drawback. The selfie point is good.

This is the only wood fossil park of WB. About ten million years ago, there were trunk of trees got covered under layer of sand, soil and over the time minerals in earth replace wood with rock but the outer structure of trunk remain as it it. This process is called Petrifaction, and thus wood is Petrified wood. In few places around the world, this wood fossil has been found. This park is one of those.

Nice experience. I have seen this type of park for the first time. Many old wood fossils are preserved here. Nature at its best I must say.

It's a plant fossil area. You'll be able to see many types of old tree fossils. Good for quick visit. You can take aesthetic photos too. Try going there in winter.

A large area conserved for display of wood fossils. Can be highly educational and interesting if provided with proper facts and details but lack of these make it somewhat dull. Obviously people can't touch them or can stand on it. People are there looking for guidance. The place is very beautiful though. A small bridge with wooden logs catches eye. Can't use the place for picnic as not allowed. Can click pictures inside the park. The pavement is slightly tacky , so for for wheel chair access it can be slightly difficult.

Visited this place around 2012-13, and it was merely an unprotected fossil ground. Good to see the government take the initiative and conserve this place. It's free to enter, and the guard tells the facts about the fossils, and how ancient people derived colourful chalks from the barks of trees. It's a wonderful place overall, also has a small food shop in front.

Great place for students of geography and life science. Fossils are collected to here by forest department. It's also a pleasurable place to visit on holiday. It has scenic beauty as well as importance of Fossils study.
