Idumban is known as a devotee of the deity Murugan and is regarded by followers as a guardian of Murugan's temples. The Idumban temple is located next to Palani Murugan's temple. The pilgrimage to Palani is considered complete when you visit both Idumban's temple and Murugan's temple together.

As per ancient stories -
Both the palani murugan hill and idumban hill was lifted by idumban as a assignment to locate Lord muruga's one of the six house.
Both the hills where taken into the shoulder of idumban and walked throughout the world. When reached this place he can't able to lift the hills anymore.
Then Lord murugan took one of the hill as his and gave another hill as a gift to idumban.
This is the only place where idumban and murugan has in seperate hills.
It is important to go idumban temple and then to palani hill. But nowadays everyone just going to palani hill.
If you go to top of idumban hill you can see whole palani hill.

Temple is in the hill top and we can see the palani temple from there.We can clearly see the top view of the palani city from there.There is no other way to reach the temple except the steps.
I have always wanted to visit this Hill. It's very difficult to climb. Not easy as Palani malai. It's best to go early morning or evening. Weather is very hot else.
It's said that as part of routine one should visit the main idumban temple, on the hill opposite to palani hill, and then visit Lord muruga.
However, due to other constraints, devotees pray at this idumban shrine instead , which is situated halfway, on the steps to the main temple.

Idumban is like a demigod who when shifting two mountains to South side wanted to take rest and put the two mountains down but when tried to carry the mountains didn't budge and settled as palani hill and idumban hill . This is one among the stories of the god here. Serene place.
