People visiting Matheran using hired vehicle like ola, Uber should book it till hutatma chauk ( Neral taxi stand) only. From this point to Matheran local taxi operates which charges 500 for taxi OR 100 per person. This payment is mandatory even if you have booked hired vehicle till Matheran.

This is entry point to Matheran Hill station via Neral town. At this place Hutatma Chowk, local taxi Mafia's which claims we've been authorized by gov. And they've put board over there of gov. Authority and all. They'll asked you to get down here if you're going to matheran by T-permit cab, bus, traveller etc... They claimed they're authorized by gov. To take passengers to Matheran Hill station by their cars only. And they've "illegal white plate Mostly Maruti Ecco" cars and some other cars like Omni etc... They'll give you two options either if you want to take t permit car to hill station pay them 500 rupees which is actually a bribe and no slip will be provided and or get down their and take their sharing illegal white plate taxi's and go uphill. This business is happening for years. And I'm telling you they're bypassing taxes which tpermit cabs pays to gov. Annually and gov. Is loosing huge amount of such revenue yearly this way. And police also aware of this scam by taking bribes route wise and indirectly support this gunda type taxis/cabs to play with peoples life all these years. Be careful while dealing with this people.
If you are planning to visit using a public taxi(yellow RTO no plate), it is the last location of your public transport vehicle(Taxi). You have to park your taxi here. From here you will get a private taxi for Matheran(100Rs/ person).
If in a tourist vehicle, get ready to be looted! The local union hand in glove with the police have a rule to make money if you wish to proceed beyond this point.

Ola, Uber and transport vehicles are not allowed ahead of this point... only taxis of neral taxi association and private vehicles are allowed...if you have take your own taxi to matheran, they will charge a slip of 500 rupees...its a disappointing one sided decision of locals, because most of the people's are not aware of this... government should intervene and end this practice.
