Holi Mela Ground - Playground in Sujanpur Tira - Hamirpur, India

Holi Mela is an annual event held in Sujanpur Tira, Sainik School Ground in the month of March during the Holi festival. It is one of the five famous fairs of Himachal Pradesh. I went to the fair yesterday with family. It was my first visit in the last 10 years but there was no difference in the kind of shops and rides installed. We reached the location at 1000h in the morning and there was no crowd, even some shops were shut. But as time progressed, more and more people flooded the area and by 1200h it was ready in all senses. Key Highlights 1. There are local products being sold in exhibition of almost all districts and some states between 1100h to 2100h 2. Three shops are installed outside the exhibition of Kullu shawls, caps, stoles and other winter items 3. One Furniture shop is set-up in the fair which is customising wooden items as per customer requirements 4. Various plants including flowers and herbal plants are being sold in a nursery installed in the fair premises Suggestions 1. Try to go in daytime as the place in not crowded during morning and afternoon sessions 2. There is sufficient parking space available near ground so there is no need to park vehicle inside the ground of you want to save parking fees 3. Bargaining is possible, so start from the half price they ask for 4. If you don't like spicy food, don't go to Rajsthani restaurants

It's a famous HOLI MELA which happens every year at SUJANPUR TIHRA ground. You can take different rides, do shopping, eat lots of local dishes as well as fast food. Overall it's funn!! The fair starts one week prior to the HOLI festival and stays till one month from the date of HOLI.

Sujanpur was previously inhabited by Maharaja Sansar Chand Katoch, the king of Kangra. He constructed his palaces, temples, and courts on top of a hill called Tira, hence the name of the town is Sujanpur Tira. In the middle of the town, there is one square kilometer of green ground, which in the Pahari language is called the 'Chaugan'. Part of this ground is occupied by the Sanik School. The notable Holi fair also takes place on this ground, and lasts for almost three weeks during the month of March. Based on the caste system, each side of the 'Chaugan' is occupied by Brahmins, Vaishyas, Kashtriyas, and Shudras, but the concept is now waning. The town has two temples constructed by the king, which are Bansiwala (for Lord Krishna) on one side of the ground, and for Narvdeshwar on the other side. One of the temples at Tira was destroyed during the 1905 Kangra earthquake, as were the most of the palace buildings. The Archaeological Department has tried to restore some of the monuments. Some of the Kangra paintings were collected by commissioner E.N. Mangatrai, and some were returned to the museum in Chandigarh.
