Hippos having fun in water, all on them literally snoring, relaxing in water
All the Hippos are sleeping and snoring in the water... Great to see these animals here...
I was pretty much excited to see the hippopotamus as this is the first time I'm ever seeing them. But the animals were just sleeping throughout. Don't know if it's because the animals were tired or if it's because of the climate. I managed to record a few videos of the animals although you need to observe them very closely if not they wouldn't look like hippos only. Ignore the audio please.
This Hippopotamus enclosure is inside the Bannerghatta zoo. You can see 4 to 5 hippopotamus here.
There are 4-5 Hippos and if you are lucky you can find them active. The best thing is you get open unhindered view unlike most other enclosures covered by iron grills. However I feel that they need a larger water body and possibly cleaner water as they like to spend significant amount of time under water. Also I understand that some fishes have symbiotic relation with Hippos so it might be good to have larger water body with fishes that provide more natural habitat for them.
If you've never seen hippos visit here and still you'll never see a hippo. I don't blame the animal but the cage construction is so bad and small you'll never see the animal out of the water. The hippos don't even have place to walk around nor swim around.
Hippos are good to watch as they play but these hippos remained cuddled to each other at one corner of the water body & apart from occasional snorts and grunts they didn't move an inch. Of course they did look up at us once or twice.
The common hippopotamus or hippo, is a large, mostly herbivorous, semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa, and one of only two extant speciesin the family Hippopotamidae. The name comes from the ancient Greek for "river horse" . After the elephant and rhinoceros, the common hippopotamus is the third-largest type of land mammal and the heaviest extant artiodactyl. Despite their physical resemblance to pigs and other terrestrial even-toed ungulates, the closest living relatives of the Hippopotamidae are cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises, etc.)
