Someone recommended checking it out. I had to take a taxi from Mcleod Ganj, it was about 25 minutes. Given the distance, relative isolation, lack of promotion, and low public awareness, I initially had low expectations. I am very surprised. The building is large, and beautiful. I was quickly, and attentively received. I was progressively wowed by the high level of quality encompassing the entire museum. The inside is an excellence in aesthetic curation. The works themselves are priceless adorations of skill, and effort. The style, detail, and dedication, found here are not only wonderful representations of art, and art history but more importantly deep representations of a rich culture. If this sounds abstract, consider it an invitation to discover for yourself why this is worth attending. I would recommend it to anyone in the area. I've been to numerous museums, and this uniquely ranks with the best.
This amazing museum gives informative guided tours, included in the price of admission. The entire process is explained in detail, along with exquisite artwork, history, and the stories behind the incredible work. An art studio with running classes is available to see inside, along with a behind-the-scenes look of paintings in-progress. You may also get a chance to 'meet the masters' which makes the experience all the more amazing. In the shop there are instructional DIY guides and even more in-depth courses and custom items on the website. Highly recommended!
Breathtaking Thangka paintings. Beautiful place. Beautiful people. I was familiar with Thangkas before, have seen many. But here I got a deeper understanding of the origin and history of Thangka painting with its different periods and styles. What Master Locho and Dr. Sarika Singh have created here in the last more than 20 years is astonishing. The Thangkas they painted are one of the most delicate/very best ones I have ever seen. Thank you very much for the very informative tour through the gallery/museum (50 min) and also for the very tasty tea. Definitely worth visiting.
The Himalayan art museum by Dr Sarika and her husband is one of the rare places where you feel that you come into a real paradise that combine art and human experience. Dr Sarika gave my group a 2 hours of joy and wonder She presented us with her life work- the creation of the Himalayan art museum. She told us the stories of the tanka art and made us realize how special this form of art is. But the most important thing was her presence- she is an extra ordinary lady that, and an amazing place that combine special art but also show you that anyone can do it! Dr. Sarika is a professor of art and an artist. She and ger husband worked years on each painting in order to preserve this old art form. Ant visit to Dharamshala would not be complete without visiting this beautiful place that they created!!
A beautiful story of Thangka art as it travelled through time, told by Dr Sarika, backed up by years of research and facts. She and Master Locho have built up a museum of unique Applique and Paintings that had me mesmerised.
Himalayan Art Museum is a collection of exquisite Tankha paintings created by the foremost exponent of the art, Master Lochoe, and curated with great care by Sarika, the first woman to master the Tankha art ever. It is a rare collection of tankha paintings. This is not meant for casual tourists but for the connoisseurs.
We witnessed very fine and rare pieces of art here at the Museum. It just transports you to a different time and place. We were given a very detailed tour of the Museum with an in-depth presentation of the evolution of Thangka paintings through the centuries - the inspiration, the influences, and geographies. This place is also an art studio and art school with one week to one year courses for learning Thangka paintings - I picked up a few DIY kits for friends and family!
I spent most of the afternoon, yesterday at this extraordinary institution in lower Dharmsala. Dr. Sarika & her husband were personally charged some years ago by HHDL to propagate the fullest embodiment of traditional thangka painting as both art form and meditative practice. This museum they've established in an out of the way corner of Dharmsala has both exhibit halls, student studios, and residences. Their brilliant young student, Sneha, who enthusiastically guided us through the exquisite exhibits, painstakingly explained the evolution of sacred art from earliest times in India, through Tibet, into exile & contemporary times. It was an absolutely extraordinary experience. Whenever you bring any sincere group or you're here, I strongly urge you to take them here!
