One of the best places to visit in Gwalior. I have visited with my family. The palace is well maintained and worth a visit Having entry fee of Rs300 /person. Locker facility is available for keeping the bags
Very well maintained museum. Has more than adequate staff. Is not only a chronicle of the Scindias over the past centuries but also a homage to the various greats and their Maharanis. Some personalities do dwarf the others. I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting a bygone era. Missed seeing the famous chandeliers due to their being under maintenance. The royal nursery displayed that all parents have the same aspirations. The puja ghar dedicated to Lord Krishna is both spectacular and peaceful. Takes about 2 hours . The museum is closed on Mondays. Staff is reluctant to hand over the suggestion book. On prodding , handed over a complaint book not understanding that suggestions are meant to be positive inputs. The ladies toilet and corridor leading to it needs attention. Poor plumbing and drainage harms the building
The museum has a collection of over 10,000 objects, including paintings, sculptures, jewelry, furniture, and weapons. The collection is divided into several sections, including: The Durbar Hall, which is the main reception hall of the palace. The hall is decorated with marble pillars, chandeliers, and a large mirror. The State Rooms, which are the private apartments of the Scindia family. The rooms are decorated with period furniture, paintings, and textiles. The Armoury, which houses a collection of swords, daggers, and other weapons. The Treasury, which houses a collection of jewelry, coins, and other precious objects. The Museum of Natural History, which has a collection of animal specimens, including skeletons, taxidermy mounts, and fossils. A great place to learn about the history of the Scindia dynasty and the culture of Gwalior.
The Jai Vilas Mahal, also known as the Jai Vilas Palace, is a nineteenth century palace in Gwalior, India. It was built in 1874 by Jayajirao Scindia, the Maharaja of Gwalior in the British Raj. While the major part of the palace is now the "Jiwajirao Scindia Museum" which opened to the public in 1964, a part of it is still the residence of some of his descendants.
Visit to this museum gave me a good walk through of the Scindia lineage and I had a good insight on their history. The museum is filled with antique stuff used by this family, the living room, the dining room, and the collection of guns swords where very interesting. The one which caught my undivided attention is the huge enormous party hall with a long dining table which has a train track running on top of it. The entry charges 300 rupees ticket per adult and it's it's worth the money. Also, if you are coming by cab, do not allow the cab to enter the parking area because the entry into the parking area is charged so you can. It's it's not a big difference of distance to cover by walk

Special thanks to our Guide Mr. Parul for giving such a great tour and going in details and lengths to explain about the objects as well as history of Scindias. It takes between 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on how crowded it is to see the museum. Of course you can spend more time if you wish. It's mainly the history of Scindia family and their heritage objects in display like special gifts etc.
The Jai Vilas Museum is a large palace situated in the heart of Gwalior. Owned by the Royal Scindia family, this Museum documents the whole life of the Scindia family tree right from 1800s. All their artefacts and belongings are kept here for public display. The grand chandelier and the food serving train is also available for public viewing. One part of the museum is the Scindia residence. Tickets are Rs 300.
Beautiful, well kept palace museum. The products are kept in sucha a way that anyone can pick and steal them. Need better security and surveillance. Many agents keep roaming the palace which is a discomfort. But a must visit place in Gwalior.
