The Archaeological Museum in Kamalapura has a rich collection of sculptures collected from various locations of the Vijayanagara ruins. Apart from the sculptures, the museum is a treasure trove of architectural pieces, artefacts, relics, coins, tools, miniature paintings, ivory items, copper plates and several other things from the glorious era of the Vijayanagara Empire.
We visited this museum on the last day of trip. It was amazing. They have collection of old Monuments, scriptures and coins.
This museum tells us a story of beautiful artwork done by the sculptures from Vijayanagara empire. It also tells us about destruction caused by invaders. Various broken pieces of pillars, idols from temples are gathered in the museum. Do visit it to appreciate the beauty of it and to understand this historical pieces of evidence.
It was lovely and people should this first before starting their visits to places around. It gives you understanding of all the places to visit near hampi and allow you to plan accordingly.
Great work by the government for conserving these rare carving from very long time, one must visit to see the greatness of Vijayanagara Empire
One of the best experience to witness the world class architecture of India.
It's rather a small museum, in a clean building, and peaceful surroundings. The display is modest in all respect, there are 2 interesting maquettes, of the area. Photos are prohibited inside the building, authorised outside. Sculptures outside are somewhat of lower quality. You don't need more than an hour to visit. A Vittala temple ticket gives you free entry.
Though a small museum, the arrangement of the galleries is impressive . So also, the large scale models of Hampi , like 3D maps , showing all its hills , monuments and waterways . The large posters with excerpts from the writings of Domingo Paes about life in ancient Hampi are particularly useful to evoke the ambience of those times . The collection of inscriptions (copper plate and palm leaf ) and ancient writing materials is interrsting . Photography inside the building is prohibited . The less valuable pieces are displayed in rows outside the building. The only drawback is that no date or source-location is mentioned in the labels of sculptures displayed inside.
