Halisahar is a municipality town of Barrackpore subdivision in North 24 Parganas district of the Indian state of West Bengal. It was initially referred to as 'Kumarhatta' and it spreads in a region that comes under the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. Halisahar shares its boundaries to the north direction by the Kalyani and Kanchrapara Municipalities, to the eastern direction by the Jetia Panchayat, to the southern direction by Naihati Municipality and to the western direction by the Ganges River. This place is well connected to the major cities of West Bengal via both road and rail routes. Therefore, all the travel vacationers will have an enjoyable time visiting this place. According to the references of Abul Fazal's 'Ain-e-Akbari' (prepared in late 16th century), the city of Halisahar was established during early middle ages in India since the reign of Sultanates. Later, it was considered as the 'City of Palaces' or 'Haveli Shahar' during the Bengal Governorship of Ithtiar Ud din Bakhtiar Khilji in early 13th century. Halisahar was also known as 'Kumarhatta', as per the studies of history specialists in post Sashanka period. Sashanakas were among the greatest rulers of Bengal. Furthermore, the historical land of Halisahar is also the birthplace of several famous spiritual and political leaders and freedom fighters like Shri Bipin Bihari Ganguly, Lokmata Rani Rashmani, Sadhak Kavi Shri Ramprasad Sen and Sripad Iswarpuri, the Guru of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The Halisahar Municipality was established in the year 1903 at the northern end of the District of North 24 Parganas. This Municipality is situated on the eastern bank of the River Hooghly, surrounded by the border of Kalyani Municipality of Nadia District at the north, Naihati Municipality at the south, and Kanchrapara Municipality and Halisahar Railway Station at the east.
