The H.H. Uthradam Thirunal Marthanda Varma Chithralayam, also known as Chitralayam Palace Museum, is an art gallery located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. It was established in 2011 by H.H. Sree Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the titular Maharaja of Travancore. The museum houses a collection of paintings, photographs, and other art objects from the Travancore royal family. The museum is located in the Rengavilasam Palace, a 19th-century palace built by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma. The palace is located in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram, and it is a popular tourist destination. The museum's collection includes paintings by both Indian and European artists. The Indian paintings are primarily from the Travancore royal family, and they depict scenes from the family's history and culture. The European paintings include works by British, Dutch, and French artists. The museum also houses a collection of photographs, including portraits of the Travancore royal family, as well as photographs of the palace and its grounds.
Beautiful Palace and museum. Must visit when in Trivandrum. Tickets for museum and Palace together Rs 70. Many old paintings and photos. Well maintained. Photography not allowed inside some areas Good explanation by guide in multiple languages. Parking space available inside.
A place to understand the historical events of Trivandrum's kingdom under the reign of the king through photos and paintings. The several halls of the building are filled with a thousand photos of the king in his different chores. There are a few artifacts too on display. But the photos are the main attraction. Some of the photos have been edited heavily to bring it to its original appearance. Good effort has been put in for the restoration. The old palace was converted into a Picture museum some time back and has become a touristic attraction of the city. But the thing is, the passive activity is not very awe-inspiring due to the monotony in the photos. After the first few photos, everything else start to look the same. Maybe history lovers might be able to dig up some interest to stroll through all the hallways. But others will simply rush through it quickly. Whatever be the case, the place is definitely a great curation.
Good maintenance... displayed many photos....clean....our culture... very silent... with car parking facility....
Uthradam Thirunal Chitralayam is located inside the same Fort complex very next to kuthira maliga. This museum has beauty of traditions and culture in every nook and corner of the palace. It's sprawling and neatly maintained. Each piece replicates the story of erstwhile Marthandams and Kerala's unique wooden Architecture.
Not a real museum, more of a foto and paintings gallery displaying the Maharaja family. Some of the exhibits are quite interesting, but there is no real story behind it. The exhibits have short descriptions, but no story line. It would have been more interesting if there would be much more information and context. The entrance fee is not expensive so it might still be okay to visit if one is interested in historic fotos.
Very beautiful place where u can see all the pictures which are taken in different historical event happened in the palace & as well as the Maharaja taken place in different events & their family photos
The Chitralayam falls 50m inside the Vettimuricha kota, East fort. The speciality of this place is that you'd find paintings of different genres, innovative artistic models and the photographs of important milestones in the administration of kerala as well as that of the Maharajas who put forth it. The place is neatly maintained with a beautiful premise and great architectural beauty.
