Passable for a night not more than that. Boys can manage but not at all recommended for female travellers. Unkempt and stinky rooms and washrooms. Staying here will make you feel like you are in an under-construction building. Owner is a nice guy, when asked about the condition, he said they are making some changes to the property. Not at all worth for the price that i paid (Around Rs. 540 and booked through Goibibio).
If you are travelling solo, gurukulam hostel is a great place to be, you'll meet super nice people there and be a part of community, manager and owner of the hostel are super nice people very helping and understanding. If you are the one who is constantly worried about the belongings leave all your worries behind everything's safe and it is a great place to be. I had a very beautiful experience in my time there.
After a week and a half in Gurukulam Hostel I have nothing but good words for the place and its employees. The best value for money option in Pondicherry without a doubt, with excellent location. Also the atmosphere among the guests is very good. If I come back to Pondicherry I will stay here again for sure.

It's a proper backpackers hostel, amenities which will be enough for your stay like decent beddings, washing machine, clean bathroom. Met a few nice people over here who were backpacking, also the owner of the place is cool and very welcoming.

This place has no ventilation to have good sleep. The room and restroom wasn't clean enough. I would say poorly managed. I am not sure why so many 5 star reviews in here. But for me personally it doesn't worked. Its inside a very congested street & Place is situated in between buildings. I've been to some other hostels too like Zostel and few others but this one wasn't my type.
No ventilation and fan are totally useless. I can bet you if you stay in 'karaikal'(they named it in that way) room, then you can't sleep for a min.
