Gowalkot is a small fort located on the southern bank of Vashishti River, about 10 km from Chiplun in Maharashtra. It is one of the historical forts in the Konkan region, and among the must-visit tourist places in Chiplun. A very small hill fort built on 2-3 acers of flat land. It's easy to climb (~30-40 mins) from the base. Now a days there is a narrow motorable road that takes you directly to the top. The fort has 10-15 cannon, fortification in but in bad shape, Uttar Darwaja, Chunyacha Ghana, water tank, Flag post with Hindavi Swarajya Flag and Shri Rejaidevi Temple. It is said that this fort has been built by a king named "Chougle". It later was ruled by Siddis of Janjira. When Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured this region, the fort was renamed to "Govindgad". During Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj's time, Siddis won this fort again. There was a heavy skirmish between Peshwa and Siddis wherein Siddi was killed and Chimaji Appa brought the fort again to Marathas. Later it went to Angre and finally to Britishers.
Easy trek for all . In recent years this fort is restored by local people and now it's in a well maintained state. They have build a stairs also. And we can see cannons and beautiful view of vashishthi river. This is not a crowded place.
Visited Nov 2016 & Jul 2017. Pics attached. My previous visit was in summer, but on this trip during the monsoons it was much better. Also a road was being built right to the top. On my previous visit I took the steps from the Someshwar Mandir. OK place to visit, great view. If you want to 'trek' there are some paths up too.
I loved that place all time, Govalkot fort is a pearl of Chiplun city's history, in monsoon season that fort looks very beautiful with greenery and river view, And near to ground level of this fort, the goddess of Chiplun city Aai Karanjeshwari Temple placed.
If you come to Chiplun must visit this place it's also known as Govind gadh there's also Devi kajireshwari temple located on the entrance, you can see toff or ballistic weapons on fort there's also one ole ponds on top.
Govalkot is also known as Govindgad. Nice place to explore if you are in Chiplun. Best view of Chiplun vashithi river. Has more than 13 canons.
At a distance of 10Km from Chiplun and surrounded by the river Vashishti. This Fort is spread over 2 acres. 1960 Shivaji Maharaj won this Fort and renamed as Govindgad.
