Gouripur House, Kalimpong - Historical landmark in Kalimpong - Kalimpong, India

One of the beautiful structure of Old kalimpong town once inhabited by the famous poet Rabindranath Tagore, is under renovation at present. The sculpture of the building is really unique. The view of the Kalimpong town is mesmerizing from this place. Some beautiful wild flowers are blooming in the place giving the place some more attraction.

One of the heritage buildings of North Bengal. But, this historical building needs the government's favour. Overall, this will give you a good experience.

I give this place a five-star rating for its historical value. However, I am saddened to see that the government is not maintaining this place. As a foreigner, it is disheartening to see that more than half of the house is occupied, and a new door has been installed on the ground floor, serving as someone's home. I am really worried that this historically significant building will be destroyed. I have heard that if an Indian occupies a government property for ten years, it becomes theirs. But I am concerned that they will not maintain it as they do not understand its value. Is there anyone who can help and contact the government? This is a good thing for the local people too, as if it becomes a tourist spot, the nearby residents can also earn some money. But without protection, as a foreigner, I came all the way here, bought a ticket, and only then saw the history. If it is not maintained, it will only be forgotten. People should be aware of such behavior.

On our way from Morgan House back to city, our cab-driver offered to take us to Gouripur House. I was aware of this place, but had absolutely no idea where it's located and current condition. It took us possibly 5-7 minutes, and the driver told us that the road leading to this place continues to the West Bengal Tourism's Hilltop Tourist Lodge. The house is situated on a step plain sprawling land. The condition of the building demands immediate maintenance and refurbishment. I was told by the driver that Govt. of West Bengal is planning to repair and set up a Tagore museum in near future, and the process is delayed because of COVID-19. Rabindranath Tagore had stayed in this house on more than one occasion; and most notably, All India Radio had recorded his recitation of 'Janmodin' on 8th April 1938 (25 Baisakh, 1345 bangabda). Couple of gigantic trees in front of the house, planted by Tagore himself, complete the landscape. Only one thing obstructed view of The Valley in Front - is the polytechnic college painted in white and blue at a step just below this house. I wish, the authorities found a different place to construct this building, which just ruins the view. Overall, a must visit, I'd say, for any tourists visiting Kalimpong. I hope, on my next visit, I'd be able to visit a renovated Tagore museum here!

If you are in Kalimpong, visit this place once. You'll love it. It was once a house of world renowned poet Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore ji. I was glad to walk through the rooms where he lived once. It has the old charm intact. I truly wish the authorities could take more care of such an old heritage.

Just because of the sheer heritage of the place, it deserves 5 stars. But I am forced to give 4 stars for two reasons. First and foremost, it is extremely difficult to locate this place. Google will show you the route, but there is not a single sign board in the area which will guide you there. We were lucky to meet a few students and parents returning from school, who guided us towards the right path. The winding road which goes down leading to the house is motorable, but is not in great shape. Second of all, as a true Tagore fan you will be utterly disappointed to see the house in such a state. Only the marble block in front of the house declares the heritage of the house where Tagore spent a lot of his last years. It was from this place that he recited his "Hey Nutan" poem on phone to Akashvani. In front of the house you will see the two trees which have been planted by Tagore himself. But the house itself lies in ruins, locked with nothing of value inside. A family lives towards the back apparently to take care of what is left. Nevertheless if you are a history seeker, you can always visit to relive the bard's connection with Kalimpong.

Feeling very sad to watch the broken, haunted house which is associated with the memory of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore. Administration must take immediate step to restore it properly.

Never thought of finding the house in such a condition. Very disappointing. It needs immediate renovation. Some locals stay there behind the house to clean the compound instead of very small amount of money from the GOVT. The nostalgic part is the Camphor tree (krpuur gaach) just in font of the house was planted by Rabindranath Tagore himself.
