Gendi Gate - Historical landmark in Vadodara - Vadodara, India

Gendi Gate is one of the most beautiful gate in Vadodara. After the renovation i feel it's beauty is enhanced. Though the white colour is something that bugs me. When you look at it closely you can observe it's beauty.

This is the southern gate of the walled city. Genda means rhinoceros in local language. It is said that rhinos were kept chained at this gate, hence the name. Its a single arch gate that was later modified to build a canopy at the top.

Nice but crowded.Good for household and grains shopping.

Gendi Gate (Darwaja), serves as the Southern gateway to the old city of Vadodara (Baroda).This gateway has an Islamic Arch with four ribbed arches. A sloping roof was later constructed during the Maratha period. Rhinos (called Gendas in Gujarati) were kept near this gate so it got the name, says the book 'Vadodara Ek Adhyayan' by archaeologist R. N. Mehta. Documents from Year 1804 and 1822 refer to Gendi gate as Baranpore nu darwajo (gate) either because it led to Baranpura area locality in the walled city. Gendi Gate (Darwaja) was a part of Southern Rampants of Kila-e-Daulatabad Fort.

One of the southern gate of the Walled city Vadodara from where one can travel towards Burhanpur of Madhya pradesh. It was also called Hari dwaar or Ishwar darwaaza as most of the burial places of most of the faiths used to be on the other side of this gate. People used to take the procession of the Dead from this gate. During Gaekwad rule, Rhinos were kept near yhis place, so is the name, Gendi gate. Right now, restoration is carried out by the VMSS.

This is one of the oldest street in Vadodara city. This place is more of seasonal market place specially in uttaryan.

All kinds of general markets available here. Due to bad air quality in this region & due to high traffic usually this place is not able to get 5 stars. Otherwise this place is fine
