Gauri Shankar Temple - Hindu temple in Naggar - Kullu, India

The Gauri Shankar temple is a magnificent ancient structure made entirely of stone. It exudes a profound sense of peace and divine blessings. Located behind Naggar Palace, this temple remains relatively unknown to tourists, but it is a hidden gem of immense beauty. As you make your way towards the temple, you will traverse a narrow road, adding to the sense of adventure and discovery. Once inside, you will find a stunning statue of Gauri Shankar, the deity worshipped at this sacred site. It is worth noting that unlike many other temples, there is no Shiva linga here; instead, the focus is on the worship of the divine couple, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, in their Gauri Shankar form. The ambiance within the temple is serene, providing a tranquil space for prayer and contemplation. Visiting this temple promises an enriching experience of both architectural marvel and spiritual solace.

This temple was very close from my stay. This is must visit place in naggar. You feel positivity at this place. Locals told us this was build during Mahabharat by Pandavs. Whenever you visit this place just sit and meditate somewhere in corner or you can find a place outside temple's gate.

The temple is believed to be the last monument of the Gurjara-Pratihara traditions. This Shiva temple is a protected monument. The temple is famous for its splendid Shikhara Style architecture. The temple features a dome shaped top while the base is present in square shape. It has simple Shikhara having nine storeys and decorated with ardharatna motifs and ornamentations. Gauri Shankar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and famous for stone carvings. The idols of Gauri and Shankar are set up on the pedestal, seated over Nandi. The garbagriha is decorated with beautiful carvings of images of Lord Ganesh, various people playing different musical instruments and also with the carvings of dancing girls. The temple is surrounded by lush and abundant greenery overlooking the Beas River. Gauri Shankar temple is facing the valley side where one can see the ice covered peaks of Kullu valley. It is must visit place at Naggar. Close to the main road before reaching Naggar Castle, one comes upon the Gauri Shankar Temple. The sight of finely carved stone shikharas of the Gauri Shankar Temple comes as a pleasant surprise. It is set in a paved courtyard below the castle and is among the oldest temples around. It is a Shiva temple and has a lingam installed inside. According to the locals, the temple was unearthed in an excavation. It is now maintained by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India). The towering shikhara is a typical example of the temple architecture in north India; there is also a statue of Nandi (sacred bull) outside the temple. There is no roof on top of the temple and the various temple structures can be directly seen under the sky. The temple is made entirely out of stone and the smaller temples are dedicated to Narayana (an incarnation of Vishnu). This temple is widely respected for its architecture and also for the local belief that visiting this temple fulfils one's wishes. A signboard indicates that the temple is a protected monument under the ASI.

Very fortunate to visit 900 years old mandir of Lord shiva.

A good place to visit if you are visiting nagar castle. You could walk down the lane left to nagar castle to reach the temple. Beautiful stone cut temple and impressive architecture.
