Designed by Henry Irwin and inaugurated in 1887, the Gaiety Theatre (or Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex, as it is now known as) was the focal point of Shimla's cultural life during the days of the British Raj, with productions by leading theatre troupes being staged here. Later still, this theatre (which, even back then, spread across several buildings, including one which housed the police department) played host to famous personalities of the Indian theatre and film industry, such as Prithviraj Kapoor and KL Saigal. The Heritage Cultural Complex was recently renovated and restored, and today hosts various cultural performances, ranging from theatre to magic shows. Besides the theatre, the building houses other spaces that are used for other cultural activities. We could not fit a performance into our itinerary, but we saw an interesting exhibition on the conservation of indigenous Himachali architecture.

It has large glass windows and Victorian style doors. The interior space is quite well-maintained and has been cleverly utilised for displaying the sculptures and paintings.

Gaiety theatre is one of the oldest buildings in Shimla built during British rule. It is said that legends have performed here. It is an example of gothic style of architecture. It is a beautiful building.
