Gagana Mahalu - Historical place in Anegundi - Koppal, India

Gagan Mahal is a palace that belonged to the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire. The palace is located in the small village of Anegundi near Hampi. The ancient palace is now just a shadow of its original self. However, it still retains an old world charm and attracts visitors on the Hampi trail. Once the abode of kings and queens, the Gagan Mahal now serves as the local administrations' building. Gagan Mahal is also known as the Old Palace. The palace is believed to have been constructed in the 16th century by the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire. It was once a gorgeous palace that served as the dwelling place for the members of the Vijayanagara royal family. However, during the downfall of the empire in 1565 A.D. due to the attack by the Mughals, this palace was also ruined like most other structures in Hampi. This 500 year old palace is one of the many palaces that added to the beauty of the kingdom during the peak of the Vijayanagara Empire. It is said that the palace was once the Queen's quarters.

Gagan Mahal is in Anegundi. Honestly speaking didn't find place worth as there is no entry and even local doesn't know when it opens. Its Just a small architecture where one can click photo. What you see in clicked pic its that only, no entry allowed and one of the part is ruined. If you just want to take cycle tour or bike tour from Anjanadari temple to Anegundi you can take , route is amazing and has beautiful surroundings for those who want photos to be clicked.

A 500 year old palace in IndoIslamic style in Anegundi . There are various accounts regarding this average sized monument : that it used to be the Queen's Quarters , that it was an administrative office , that it was a royal holiday retreat etc . The name Gagan Mahal reflects its supposed architectural quality of remaining cool inside even during the hottest summers . The surroundings are not very clean , though the building looks freshly painted . It was locked and locals had no idea if or when visitors are allowed in . Reportedly , one part of the building is fully ruined .

Beautiful place, nothing much to see. Its photo point, can be covered while gng to nava brindavana.

This is not the best attraction of hampi. Gaganamahal is located just nearby to a local junction-like area.

This monument looks like an imposter!! Even though it is beautiful, it doesn't satisfy you due to its smaller size! Since it's nearby to river ride, we planned to visit and took some photos, it was a short visit worth to think of, which will be 10 to 20 mins max. FYI, as of 7th Aug 2022, it's was restricted for puplic access due to some restoration.

This particular monument is crumbling right now. when I visited, it was closed for renovations. They are trying to put it back together, but I dont think it can be restored to the former beauty (even 5 years old) and the way the village is around it, practically anybody and everybody has access to it, knowing how people behave around such neglected monuments, I wont be surprised if it gets destroyed completely one day. There's so much beauty around Anegundi itself. One has to see to believe. But Gagan Mahal is presently in a very bad shape. You cannot see it from inside for a while.
