Fort Geldria - Fortress in Pulicat - Thiruvallur, India

It's a 17th century cemetery maintained by the govt (may be ASI). The vaults are still in good shape with engravings clearly visible. The structures in the cemetery are very peculiar and the most peculiar thing I noticed is the absence of a cross on any of the tombs. During my visit, several other visitors also were at the place. Entry is free.

Fort Geldria is essentially a Cemetary that was constructed by the Dutch settlers. However, this place has high historic value and is extremely well maintained. There is no entry fee and one can take amazing pictures here. The locals are highly friendly and guide you around. Best time to visit would be between November to March as it tends to get quite hot during the summer season.

It is a Dutch Property which has tombs of King and Queen. It looks like a haunted place in pulicat now it is under the archeological department of India. (Need to be maintained by the government). Fort Geldaria, located in Pulicat, Tamil Nadu, was the seat of the Dutch republics, the first settlements in India and also the capital of the Netherlands Coromandel. It was built by the Dutch East India company in 1613 and became the local government center in 1616. It was named for Geldria, the native province of composition van Berchem, the General Director of the company. Regularly protected by a garrison of 80 to 90 people, Fort Geldria was the only fortification in the Indian Empire, all other positions of the Dutch company were trading posts.

I would give it a five ! It's very pretty. And no, it's not a fort. It's a cemetery. V were approached by boat man claiming to take us to island , and let us play in the water and stay. It was a very good experiment .

It's not maintained properly The fort was built on the shores of Pulicat Lake, which provides access to the Bay of Bengal and the Coromandel Coast, an important area for trade and a scene of rivalry between the colonial powers of the Dutch, the Portuguese, and the British. A Portuguese fort had existed previously on the spot, and Fort Geldria was built on its foundations, with the permission of Queen Oboyama, wife of Vijayanagara Emperor Venkatapati Raya, based in Chandragiri Fort, who was supposed to contribute financially and become part-owner. This process, however, proved too slow for the Dutch, and they decided to finance and build it themselves.[6] Local tradition holds that a Dutch ship, stranded in 1606, found aid among a group of expatriate Muslims, and thus began a trade partnership.

Waste time to trip! NO maintained by the TN government or other... this place is dirty... but place is Historic Dutch, it looks like haunted place...

We were disappointed with the Bush-encroached and -hidden Fort after an hour on bad roads.. Plan your Route. ....a local guide may know better. The Dutch Cemetery dates back to the 16th Century. Worth a half-day if you plan to visit Pulicat Beach and the estuarine Waterfront.
