Five Lights - Historical landmark in Chennai - Chennai, India

Very congested and narrow roads. If you drive 4 wheeler these streets could get you stuck. Don't even think about Parking your car it would cause more road blocks.

Five lights is a small place near Purasawakkam in Chennai and the place is also known as Kosapet. There are many traditional artisans who make very nice dolls (mainly statues of Gods and Deities of all religions). The dolls are made of clay(a type of soil) and nicely painted and they have long life. I bought a young Lord Krishna doll from an old and poor lady for 500 Indian Rupees (approximately 6 US Dollars) and gifted it to one of friends for the Navratri Gollu. The facial expression of that doll was hilarious and it was very much Godly and many of my friends appreciated it's craftsmanship. This doll would have costed at least Rupees 2000 in a big show room or a big mall. You get variety of dolls at a very low price. We also get nicely painted pottery there. The poor artisans are selling the dolls in some make shift shops. Those who cannot afford a shop, are simply displaying the dolls under a tree and sell. It's high time that the craftsmanship of those poor artisans are recognised and their livelihood protected.

Land mark to guide root inside the interior area of Kosapet (Kuyapettai). It is the place very famous on the event of Vinayaka chathurthi. Lair Ganapathy's idols manufacturing area as well as displayed on the road side in and around the Five Lights. Ganapathy idols supplied to entire North and south Chennai from here.
