The farakka barrage is situated in Murshidabad district in the Indian state of West Bengal and is 18 km away from the border of Bangladesh and about 300 km North of Kolkata. It was opened in 1975 and designed by the Hindustan Construction Company. The barrage is approximately 7,559 feet long. The feeder canal is about 42 km long. There are total 109 gates in which 108 are above the river and the 109th gate is above the lowlands of Malda as a precaution. Barrage supplies water to the Farakka Super Thermal Power Plant. The farakka barrage was designed to serve the need for preservation as well as for the maintenance of the Kolkata port. This barrage is also located on the Bhagirathi - Hooghly river. Therefore, it plays a vital role for the people of this state. This barrage helps in the hydroelectricity process of this country. A large amount of hydroelectric energy is produced from this barrage. This bridge is very much popular and it gives connectivity to farakka with malda as well as farakka with pakur. It has both road way as well as railway. The under water here is also used as a water transport channel.

It is the longest barrage in West Bengal, total length is 2240 metres. The barrage was opened in 1975, after a long constructy period (14 years). Today it is only connection from North Bengal to South Bengal, both Rail and Road. Due to rapidly growing vehicles pressure, another road bridge is being continued.

The farakka barrage. Its a beautiful location. The road is a bit narrow, being a national highway. A 2nd bridge is being constructed, though we dnt know when that will be completed. Once the other bridge completes its going to be a smooth pass over the barrage.
