the Dashavatara Cave, also known as Cave 15, marks a late phase of cave architecture in Ellora. It is the only cave in the complex which bears an inscription both dating it and linking it to royal patronage, specifically that of the Rashtrakutas. Scholars have used this to argue that the Rashtrakuta king Dantidurga ordered the excavation of the cave to commemorate his conquest of the Ellora region in the mid-eighth century CE.

Cave no 15 require almost 100 stairs to climb and all painting are on 2nd floor of caves, it's has paintings of shivleela and vishnu puran, Additional tip: this cave can be avoided if you have seen kailash temple cave paintings as they are same.

To this cave, there is a very considerable ascent up the rock by means of steps. Like the last two Buddhist caves, the whole court had been hewn out of the solid rock, leaving a curtain wall across in front of it, and a sacrificial hall in the middle, with a number of small shrines and a water cistern in the surrounding walls. This hall has had a porch to the left supported by two square pillars in front of a perforated window

Visited Aug 2018. Quite a nice two-storeyed cave. Has a monolithic mandapa at the middle of a court. Numerous sculptural panels. See attached pics.

The Ellora Caves complex includes 12 Buddhist caves, which are a testament to the rich and diverse religious history of ancient India. The Buddhist caves feature large, open spaces with high ceilings, reflecting the influence of ancient Indian architecture The Ellora Caves were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, in recognition of their cultural and historical significance

Architecture of the temple is good, built of red stone. Good thing about this temple is we can go inside of shrine and touch Shivaling and performance pooja unlike other temples where we get to get the idol for micro seconds.
