The Hathigumpha Inscription is the main source of information about the Jain Kalinga ruler Kharavela. His year-by-year achievements in this inscription, states Richard Salomon, "approximates the character of a pure panegyricThis inscription, consisting of seventeen lines has been incised in Prakrit language and Brahmi script. The inscription starts on the overhanging brow of Hathigumpha cavern and the first eight lines are visible at the front. The remaining nine lines continue on the same rock, but given the sloping shape of the cavern, it appears on the cavern's roof. The seventeen lines cover about 15 feet by 5.5 feet of the stone's surface.Below this inscribed rock, the cavern's walls are rock-cut and some sections polished. These too have inscriptions, but these were added between the 10th and 11th-century, and are called minor Hathigumpha inscriptions. What an experience. Outstanding. The caves are situated just at the outskirts of the city of Bhubaneshwar. The visit to the caves is a mesmerizing experience. You will be thrilled to find the caves to be neat and clean and well maintained. The price of ticket is 25/- per person and it's worth it. To reach the elephant cave, you will have to go up through the elevated slope from the road. 70 The view of the caves are marvelous and you will be spelbound by the view of the Bhubaneshwar city from the top of the hill. It will take around one and half hours to visit and inspect all the caves around. If you are looking forward to click some memorable photos and selfies, then it may take upto two and a half to three hours. 135 We went at around 4 pm, in the month of May that too during month end, 28th of May. It was quite hot and humid. After visiting the caves, we ( myself and my wife) had two coconut waters which cost around 50/-per piece. 179 The art and technology used to build and preserve the caves will surely make you proud about the fact that how advanced our ancient technologies were.

This is the best place to have a way back 1st century to 10th century architectural work.. Its kind of a small trekking place. Great place to feel the nature and architecture at the same time. Best time to visit is winter or rainy season.
It is a wonder. So long ago they made multiple caves to host Jain devotees here for a conference. This was kind of their accomodation. This has panoramic drainage system which is similar to Harappa.
