Dutch And Armenian Cemetery - Featured Reviews (596)
The Dutch as well as Armenian cemeteries at Surat are situated in a locality known as 'Gulam Falia' near the mail road leading to Katargam Gate. The Dutch tombs are of various sizes and shapes, but the one that excels all the rest in magnificence is the grandiose mausoleum of Baron Adrian Van Reede and, is described here in detail. The tomb of Baron Adrian Van Reede, who was the Director of the Dutch Company in the Indies was intended to rival and eclipse that of the Oxendens in English cemetery. It consists of a double cupola of great size, with a gallery above and below, supported on handsome columns. This monument was formerly ornamented with frescoes, escutcheons, and passages from the Scripture, and the windows were filled with beautiful wood carving. The Armenian cemetery is situated adjacent to that of the Dutch. Though, the graves in this cemetery, arc bearing a large number of inscription slabs they have no super-structures raised above them as is the case in the English and Dutch cemeteries. The oldest epitaph is the one of Armenian verse over the tombstone of a lady named Marinas, the wife of the priest Woksan, who was a crown to her husband, according to the proverbs of Solomon. The date of her death is mentioned as 1028 of the Armenian era ( Christian year 1579).
Really peaceful and eye catching place I would say this is. If you're a photographer you will definitely feel good about this place and also this is a really good place for making short films or doing some videography! Some new buildings surrounding this historical place would itch you if you're a photographer! The place is perfect for shooting some songs! There are lesser graves here than English cemetery so you can freely roam! The best time to go there is between 9am to 10am when you have good sunlight there! And it opens at 9am in morning.
Great place right in middle of Concrete Jungle in the metropolis. The Architecture is of great worth but it has weathered with time. Civic authorities should take some action soon regarding preserving and restoration of the place. It has got the Armenian cemetery more than 500 years old and a much larger Dutch cemetery of around 350 years old. Need of an hour is to preserve such masterpiece of colonial architecture in India.
This Dutch cemetery holds a profound sense of history and reverence. The beautifully maintained grounds and thoughtfully designed memorials create a serene and respectful atmosphere. Walking through the rows of gravestones, one can't help but reflect on the lives that once were. It's a place to pay homage and find a sense of connection to the past.
It is a nice place to visit. The route to here is not much good and it is too small. There is no sign boards here. There is no tickets to enter into this cemetery, even there is no security guys or employees here. Construction wise the cemetery is really nice. But no one is taking care of the place. People who are staying nearby are not considering this as a place of attraction
Dutch Cemetery is place which one should watch as, this place have the remainings of Lords and Cornell's of East India Company and also Military. The place is not very well maintained. Should be maintained well. Local People around makes dirty and they seat over there and light cigarettes and all so from the Department of Archeology should look over it and put a proper maintenance of the place. It is the place to be visit by all the age group and look over the great structure made there and which we cannot see anywhere else.
This is performing a lot in Surat City's History. But now a days City Government have no attention on this place. Approx 100+ grave monuments with their name plate also. That are really a Golden page of history. Now a days many structure are not in good condition and people are using them for playing now.
Nice place ,Beautiful memorial verses have been engraved on the tombs. There was a tombstone of a baby who died merely 2 months after her birth. Tombs of army soldiers, captains and their families fill up this medium sized ground. Each touching verse spoke about how the person had lived, how he or she touched their lives and how they wish his or her soul rests in peace. Each message was filled with sentiments and affection of the departed's loved ones.
