It's remote and raw near village need to be conserve and will come out as beautiful wetlands with various species of birds and off its main attraction is big beautiful Sarus crane.
Went on my bike (cycle). A bit hard to reach, the ride's gonna be bumpy. And even when you do reach, hard to figure what the exact spot is. The locals are warm and welcoming & proud, but I see strong encroachment. Couldn't understand where the farmlands end and the protected spot begins. Also, seems like the lake is completely swallowed by water hyacinth and not much place left for birds to feed on, except the farmlands, which is harmful for them for obvious reasons. It is in danger of complete disappearance in next few years, with whatever's left.
Saras Crane, the tallest flying birds! You still remember the day when you first met these fellows in Dhanauri wetland in Greater Noida. You were surprised to see the birds almost of your size just standing by your side. Yes, Sarus Cranes are the tallest flying birds in the world and it is a delight to see them dance and sing. You mainly find them in marshy wetlands. It is said that they pair to life. These birds are revered in most parts of the world especially in India. The bird is listed as 'Vulnerable' in IUCN Red List. Their global numbers are decreasing due to habitat loss, hunting and other reasons. The efforts are being made to sensitize the farmers to protect these lovely birds especially in Uttar Pradesh where they are crowned as the state birds.
Bird sightings included sarus crane, painted storks, black ibis, white ibis, black necked stork and so many purple moorhens and other usual birds and ducks that are to be found near wetlands. It's just open fields. No sanctuary or anything. Driving is the only way. Carry your camera. Birds are surprisingly nearby.
The wetlands are home to Sarus cranes and there are plenty around this time of the year. The approach roads are ok but it is suggested if you have a mini SUV or SUV that is better for handling marshy patches and slush and sand. The wetlands are not fenced or with a limiting boundary like Okhla Bird Sanctuary or Surajpur Bird Sanctuary. Ofcourse get you zoom lens there and loads of patience to not scare off the birds.
Dhanauri is my 2nd Wetland visit in back to back weekends after Haiderpur Wetland. Dhanauri at the moment is best for bird watching This one had limited area but more verity of wetland birds. Western Swamphen was my high. Parking is an issue you have to park in a narrow road.
An amazing wetland in the middle of a village that is now protected. The locals are warm, welcoming and proud that so many birds come and winter in their village.
It's a nice place to capture Saras... nice vibe... so, grab your cameras and get ready to click....
