Mayuranathar Temple is in the town of Mayiladuthurai (formerly known as Mayavaram or Mayuram) in the Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu in India. The gopura at the eastern entrance to the temple is nine storeys high and measures 194 feet (59 m).[citation needed] The idol of Durga near the northern entrance of the temple is expertly sculpted and differs from those in other temples. On the temple walls, there is the sculpture of a devotee trying to sever his head as an offering to the God. There is an expansive temple tank in the centre of the complex. People travel in large numbers to Mayiladuthurai to bathe in this tank on the day of the new moon in the Tamil month of Aippasi (November-December).[citation needed] This bath purifies a person of sins because the waters of the river Ganges and other Indian rivers mingle with the waters of the Kaveri river in this tank on this particular day.

Another colossal temple of Chola period. It is not only large but has magnificent sculpting, probably the best I have seen in any Chola period temple. The Ambal shrine is separate and that is also huge. This temple is also Dhanu Rashi temple, one among 12 Rashi temple. This temple also has Jeev Samadhi of Kudhumbar Swami, which is located below Ganapati shrine which is just adjacent to Dakshinamurthy shrine in the prakaram. A sign board mentions this location. Dakshinamurthy idol is really very beautiful and looks living. Another interesting thing is Satchinathar shrine which is place on one level up in prakaram above Gajlakshmi shrine. It is visible from below while doing pradakshina.

Another temple in Mayiladuthurai which is again quiet and peaceful and where one can feel a very good vibe. Both Mayuranathar and Abhayambigai Thayar are a blessing to watch. The temple is huge with a big pond. There is the temple elephant which stands near the entrance and blesses the devotees.
